On a side note: As a teacher I do not believe in tenure...I think that it is an unneeded safetly net. If a teacher is good at their job, then they do not need to worry about losing it.

The above was posted in a different thread and I though it interesting enough to open it for discussion.

As I understand tenure, its supposed to give a teacher academic freedom by making it harder to terminate their employment. Even if a teacher is good at their job (and often a very good teacher is one that needs stretches the bounds of academic freedom), they can run afoul of school boards and hidebound parents..

I agree I know just recently I have heard several different stories where teachers absolutely needed fired but could not be because of tenure.
