My mother in law is a South African citizin. She is in the process of getting a Portuguese passport through her father (who was born in Madeira). The documents are almost through and I was wondering whether my South African Citizen husband is able to get a passport through her and if we have been marrried for a few years, does that mean I am also able to get one?

Since she obtains Portuguese citizenship at this age, she may have to follow immigration procedures which it will take quite sometime for your husband to obtain citizenship through her. In most cases, as a spouse, you are also added as beneficiary but it may not be immediate.

Yes, after your mother-in-law grants her portuguese citizenship, your husband will become a child of a Portuguese citizen, therefore he will be eligible to apply for the native Portuguese citizenship, just like his mother.
If you are married for over 3 years to your husband you will also become eligible to apply for the Portuguese citizenship, once that the effects of his citizenship will act backwards to the date of his birth.
