I have an older scotts (1998) mower with hydrostatic tranny that sat for a year and I'm now rehabbing it. Two years ago it was having intermittent starting problems where the ingnition lights on the dashboard would light up, but it would not spin the starter even with a hot battery. I suspected the soleniod, but parked it without fixing it. I recently pulled the solenoid to replace it, and it was some time before I got a replacement. I now cannot remember the proper location of the wires. It has the usual two post design where the + battery connection is attached, and the other that goes to the starter. It also has a blade connector for a wire, I got that one right. There are two additional wires that connect to the top posts a red and a black. These are the two that have me confused. My first attempt at reconnect was a failure connecting the smaller red and black wires to the battery side of the solenoid. This produced some smoke from the flywheel area. After a quick disconnect, I tried again this time with the single smaller red wire on the battery side and the black on the starter side. I get (no smoke) whew, but no start either. The dashboard lights up as if to start but when the key is turned all the way to start position, the Battery light comes on. Once I solve this issue, I'll discuss my next two issues at a later date. Thanks in advance for your assistance.
