I'm putting in a new service 60 amp with 200 amp. I have meter box steel 2" riser and weather head.can I use pvc conduit out of bottom of meter box 2ft and then into house over to new 200 amp breaker panel? I'm told 02 wire is the correct size? Because of the pvc do I need to run a ground wire from the steel riser to the new breaker panel? I know I need a ground rod and ground going to water entrance line.

Yes, PVC can be used between the meter and panel. Assuming there is not a main breaker at the meter, but at the panel, DO NOT run a ground wire between the meter and panel, just the neutral.

The grounding electrode conductor, the wire that runs from the ground rod, can connect to the neutral either at the meter or the panel. Bond the neutral to the panel box using the green screw that comes with the panel.


#2/0 copper or #4/0 aluminum wire is allowed for a residential 200 amp service.


The steel riser conduit is bonded by using the threaded conduit hub that is bolted to the top of the meter socket, no ground wire is needed.

Check with local codes, more than one ground rod may be needed. And, even thou ground rod is used, if you have a metal water system in the building, you must run at least a #6 copper wire to the water pipe to bond the water system. This bond can attach anywhere on the metal water line. If you have a city water feed using metal pipe, then grounding is a bit different.
