Thanks for the quick responses to my questions I now have a few more questions.
1. Can I also claim my step son as a dependent and apply for a ss card for him?
2. We have property in Jamaica a House that we pay property tax on and land that we are paying a mortgage as well as property taxes on: Can I make a claim for for the interest that I pay on the mortgage for the land or does this only apply to homes?

1) Yes, if he lived with you, his biological parent(s) does not claim him, and you provided more than half of his support.

2) Yes.

1. What forms and/or documentation will I need to claim the mortgage interest?
2. My step son lives in Jamaica with his Dad, I do provide more than 50% of his support.
How do I go about getting a ss # for him?

1) Mortgage interest paid is reported on Form 1098, copies of which are sent to you and the IRS by the mortgage company.

2) If he is NOT a U.S. citizen, you will need to apply for a Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN) using Form W-7. This form is submitted with the tax return, along with specific documentation that shows he IS your son. The required documentation is listed in the W-7 instructions.
