So, I'm going to offer some info about me in hopes that you guys can give me some good ideas for a tattoo.

I'm 22. The name is Cherish. I'm an Optician. My father passed when I was 15 of cancer. I have one half-sister. I love chihuahuas.

Now, here are som ideas:

Memorial for Dad.
Matching sister tat.
Something involving my name.

First, I don't really want any tattoos in my body... because the bible says our body is the temple of God, and we should look after it... it was just loaned to us...

 Amazing!

As a start CM, have you seen any designs on other people that you like and could have something similar, or are you going for all-out originality?

ChihuahuaMomma

I don't want anything close to anything anyone else has.

ChihuahuaMomma
Jul 25, 2008, 02:11 AM
And I should probably mention that I am not at all religious. No crosses or such. Feel free to ask questions to get more info.

Fair play!

Well a memorial to your Dad sounds a really nice idea then, and will be unique (unlike matching tatoos with your Sister, as you'll both have them! Ha ha!)

You are new here, so I will spare you a reddie. I did not ask anything about religion, god, or your beliefs. I asked suggestions on designs for tattoos.

That's something I really want to do, but cannot perfect an idea.

Two of the ideas I had was his name or initals with angel wings and a halo (but that makes no sense since I'm not religious)

And another was just his eyes (which the drawing looked pretty creepy).

So any ideas ON TATTOOS are always well received.

Sorry, but its just my opinion... I don't want you be sorry later, having a tattoo,. and when that times come I hoped you'll remember what I have said... good luck

*ChihuahuaMomma, standing at the Pearly Gates, wishes she would have listened to 1300starlet*

Ha ha ha, behave! Are you Jewish or something 1300?

Anway, back to the question in hand! It seems like you've already put a bit of thought into this tattoo! Is there anything your Dad liked doing or maybe something to do with his job that you could incorporate?

ChihuahuaMomma
Jul 25, 2008, 02:25 AM
He was a tattoo artist. But I don't want it to be about what he did, but more who he was. I was also thinking of incorporating my sister in there. He's not her bio father, but was there when she was born, signed for birth certificate, and was her father her whole life. She's hawaiian.

There is also an azalea plant named cherish, I was thinking maybe something with that, a hawaiian flower, and something for ym dad... Just pondering random things.

His name is Daniel Andrew, if that helps... sorry, can't reveal last names...

iAMfromHuntersBar
Jul 25, 2008, 02:33 AM
Perhaps you could just have the flower as a memorial to your Dad? As simple as that!

ChihuahuaMomma
Jul 25, 2008, 02:34 AM
What sort of flower? I want something that means something.

iAMfromHuntersBar
Jul 25, 2008, 02:38 AM
The Cherish (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Azalea) flower... although you would need to find out what it looks like first! It will always mean something so long as it means something to you!

ChihuahuaMomma
Jul 25, 2008, 02:42 AM
It's not a flower, just a plant, and conveys not about who he was. That's what I want this tattoo to mean. See why I've waited four years? I was planning to get this when I turned 18.

iAMfromHuntersBar
Jul 25, 2008, 02:47 AM
Sorry, but the Cherish has a flower, specifically a "semi-double hose-in-hose flower form with slightly frilled margins, coral-pink flower color with a dark coral-pink blotch" (http://www.freepatentsonline.com/PP09910.html), I wouldn't have suggested it otherwise! Ha ha! Surely that conveys the name he chose for you!

Anyway, you don't want that, back to the drawing-board!

ChihuahuaMomma
Jul 25, 2008, 02:52 AM
My Dad didn't pick my name, my Mom did... But you're right, it does have a flower... none that I googled showed flowers... lame!

But I was thinking of something flowy pretty ethereal

Clough
Jul 25, 2008, 03:28 AM
ChihuahuaMomma was just looking for an opinion on what tattoo to have and not a judgment call! If someone wants to judge whether it's right or wrong to have a tattoo according to there religious beliefs, then it would be best for them to be posting about that on a religious board and not one that is about Body Art.

ChihuahuaMomma
Jul 26, 2008, 02:14 AM
Ok, so I was thinking of something... what about just "Dad" written in beautiful calligraphy with an eagle feather quill? I thought of eagle feather because they are rare, and so was he... yay or nay?

Hm. Missed this question until now..

Is there something that you shared with your father? Something special? Maybe an activity... a book... song...

ChihuahuaMomma
Aug 1, 2008, 11:56 PM
Nope. I had quite a bit of time with him, but it few and far between, he was living in Texas while I was living in Oregon or Washington (Thanks "Mom").

Alty
Aug 3, 2008, 10:53 PM
How about your name written in calligraphy with a tattoo of a fountain pen at the end, looking as if it was just written with that pen. You said he was a tattoo artist, so the pen would represent him, and your name being written by that pen would be almost like your dad gave you the tattoo.

You could incorporate the flower as well.

ChihuahuaMomma

Thanks for the suggestion, but I don't want another language tattooed on me unless it's one that I speak... It would mean nothing to me... far too cliché...

Not to put down your idea...

Do you like faeries? Or wings?

http://tattoo.about.com/library/graphics/heartwings.jpg --This one is wings with a heart in the middle.. you could do something similar and put your fathers intials in the middle... or underneath.
http://z.hubpages.com/u/88240_f520.jpg Faerie... with word next to it.. If you like that kind thing.

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b283/burning_/My_Fairy_Tattoo.jpg You could make something like this with the cherish flower... and your dads name under it or something..

Do you like color tatts? Or black and white..
Im a black and white kind of person.. but butterflies are pretty.

ChihuahuaMomma
Aug 3, 2008, 11:26 PM
I don't like fairies or wings... LOL... can you see why its taking me so long to decide on something?

Perhaps something with a heart though?

Not into anything mythical?

Mermaids?

Any certain colors?

Not sure what glowy and ehtereal means..

Can you send a link with something you kind of like? It might help with to know what your style is..
Lol, I don't know why but I picture your taste as swirls and vibrant sensoul colors.. mysticalish... maybe it's the age thing. I am a year younger..

ChihuahuaMomma
Aug 3, 2008, 11:38 PM
I really like that one without the flames... I actually have that one saved in my "tattoo folder" on my desktop for my sister's and my tattoo...

But something else for my Dad's...

KissMe10der
Aug 3, 2008, 11:39 PM
Hmmm, are you looking for something that represents him? Or Just his name? In your head, what reminds you of him? Like you see something and it just makes you think of him?

ChihuahuaMomma
Aug 3, 2008, 11:42 PM
Something that represents him. His name. I don't know. Long hair, tattoos, harley... that reminds me of him, but none of those are things that I would want tattooed on me...

KissMe10der
Aug 3, 2008, 11:48 PM
Hmmmm,

A tattooing needle thingy.. with a cord spelling out his name?

http://www.istockphoto.com/file_thumbview_approve/2933403/2/istockphoto_2933403_heart_with_swirls.jpg --this is cute.. It something I would get.. Initials in the heart.. maybe get rid of the little hearts.. and making the swirls different colors and symmetrical.. . No red.. pinks, purples, blues..

What colors do you like?

You want something more girly then what reminds you of your father?

ChihuahuaMomma
Aug 3, 2008, 11:51 PM
I want a little of both... I'm not sure...

I want something girly, cause I am... and something that reminds me of him...

KissMe10der
Aug 3, 2008, 11:52 PM
Is there a childhood book he used to read you?

Like my fav is that book about the fish and his sparkle scales..

Or a movie you used to watch with him?

Something you would do together? Swim? Sports? Sing?

For me, I'd have to do a fish for my dad.. he loves fishing.

ChihuahuaMomma
Aug 3, 2008, 11:57 PM
Nope, there was nothing... we never lived in the same state... :(

He passed of esophageal cancer when I was 15. He was 36.

KissMe10der
Aug 4, 2008, 12:02 AM
Hmmmm... You're a toughy! Lol

I'm sorry to hear that. Its hard to lose someone.. harder to watch them slowly die.

Its been a rough 2 years for me... Lost my Grandma jan 2007 (dads mom), lost my grandfather (moms dad) June2007, and just lost my uncle from 3 different kinds of cancer in April. Not to mention my 2 dogs last summer.. one was old and needed to be put down... the other the dog tag got stuck between the deck boards.. he freaked out and twisted himself till he choked.

Anyway..

Have you thought of a beautiful eye.. and in the pupil his initials.. like you are remembering him? With some swirls around it?

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2062/1550228853_956532dd86.jpg --eye..

http://z.about.com/d/tattoo/1/0/w/p/taesa081504c.jpg -- I don't really like that example.. but something more to your liking.. Different swirls.. those are too thick.

ChihuahuaMomma
Aug 4, 2008, 12:05 AM
I actually had a design of an eye, but couldn't think of where to put it... I thought my back would be kind of inappropriate for sexual reasons, if you catch my drift... but if you can think of something else...

KissMe10der
Aug 4, 2008, 12:08 AM
Something else? As another place to put it? Your ankle? Neck?

ChihuahuaMomma
Aug 4, 2008, 12:09 AM
The eye makes sense, but it just doesn't sound like something that I would like...

I don't know... I am a toughie!

Is there perhaps a flower that represents "daddy's girl" or something?

KissMe10der
Aug 4, 2008, 12:24 AM
Did you dad have a favorite saying? Or book, or movie?

You could find a meaningful quote ?

I was just looking at Ring Tattoos... That would be cool.. but better on toes. But as I heard on the other Thread some places its not allowed.

http://lc.fdots.com/cc/lc/b4/b43d4bd0f112e3779df42a8758276cb5.gif

How about something that compliments your fathers tattoos?

Or something he had... have you looked at old pics to see his?

ChihuahuaMomma

KissMe10der
Aug 4, 2008, 12:46 AM
Hmmmm, I am going to have to think more about this. If I had a scanner I would mock up some ideas.

At the moment, I think that a tattoo gun with a set of angel wings in pink, purple, blue... and RIP above and his name below.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2200/2480880155_0b548488e7.jpg -- like that.. but more turned not a side view. And a bit more detailed but not too realistic.

http://www.typophile.com/files/cartoonw_6339.jpg --- with some nice swirly script.

ChihuahuaMomma
Aug 4, 2008, 12:49 AM
I don't want all that on me... too much... no tattoo gun... Sorry, I really am picky. That's why its taken me SEVEN years to get to THIS point, I know well what I don't want...

I like the idea of the font though!

Alty

I'm in my 30's, got my first of 8 tats so far when I was 16 and I personally do not regret them, they are my expression. To each his own, tats aren't for everyone - but since you are wanting one! : )...

I have hmm'd and haaa'd about getting a 'memorial' tattoo for my dad, he passed away quite a few years ago and he was incredibly special to me. There was a flower that he always picked for me when I was a little girl, I got a tattoo of that a few years ago, no words, no names, no anything, just the symbolism to me and I LOVE IT!

Don't rush yourself, you'll know! If you want something more reflective of who you are and not a memorial tattoo at this time really dig deep, your inner persona. Have you checked into symboilsm at all? There are tons of awesome symbolic things in this world, far beyond the basics you see often. FUN TOPIC!! Keep us updated.

Oh cool.. you are on, never had that happen before! Lol..

I have a book on symbolism, there are probably sites online, any kind of vibe you have in mind or are you really thinking right now of your father, and something symbolic with him? I'm so sorry.. I had posted before I read all of your posts, just finished. I love Altenwegs idea too... it will however be a permanent fixture of what he died from, so think of that too (it's a beautiful butterfly though - unique idea)

ChihuahuaMomma
Aug 4, 2008, 10:22 PM
Well, considering what he died from won't ever change... You know, it's not a bad idea... it's a good idea... still no positive about it yet though.

I'm thinking that I'll get it done in a year or so, so I'm gathering tons of ideas right now.

I want something kind of glowy and ethereal, angelic, mystical if you will...

I don't want anything religious... Something that represents him and me...

Alty
Aug 4, 2008, 10:22 PM
The nice thing about the butterfly is that it's girlie too, not only symbolic. For people who don't know the symbolism behind it, it's just a butterfly tattoo, it's up to you if you want to tell them what it signifies. If you don't tell then it's just for you, symbolic to you, and not to the world.

Mine was fairly easy to choose, I wanted the hearts because of the love that my parents shared with each other, and the love they had for me. I put their initials in the hearts so that I'd have a piece of them with me always. The diamond in the middle is to unite the two hearts, so that they will be together forever, the anklet part is just to complete the tattoo, for looks only. ;):)

Whatever you choose has to be special to you, something that you can look at and enjoy, but also remember what it signifies to you and you alone.

ChihuahuaMomma

I wouldn't mind throwing my sister in there iether.

CM, you ever try going to a tattoo artist and just looking around the shop? Most of the time, they have their artwork posted everywhere. Also, if you ask nicely, sometimes they can give you a sketch of what they can offer you, and perhaps you can take it from there.

I think a tattoo should be something you absolutely fall in love with before you get into it (kinda like a marriage) but it's a start.

The fallen cherry blossom is not taken lightly in Japanese symbolism either. It often represents the beauty of snow and there are many connections made in Japanese literature or poetry to a fallen cherry blossom and snow. This also has been extended to the life of a warrior whose life was ended early in battle.

No, cause neither of us were too into Astrology... It's something fun to read, but we don't/didn't follow it.

You know, I'm thinking like a group of flower with separate meanings to represent him and his personality.

I think that is a VERY COOl idea, very personal.. and.. you can throw other things, like greenery that has symbolic meaning as well as accents.. and.. Altenwegs butterfly she found would be gorgeous by flowers

Have you chosen a flower?

Tralyn
Aug 4, 2008, 11:23 PM
My flower is on my upper middle back, covered often, shown in summer. I have a friend that has a memorial tattoo on the front of his shin, also many are on arms.. where are you thinking?

ChihuahuaMomma
Aug 4, 2008, 11:28 PM
Obviously somewhere that can be easily hidden, as my dress is conservative normally, and business casual at work.

I was thinking in between my soulder blades...

But the sad part is that I won't be able to see it...

ChihuahuaMomma
Aug 4, 2008, 11:29 PM

I'm thinking yellow zinnia... and something else... HELP!

Tralyn
Aug 4, 2008, 11:30 PM
You'd be surprised. You are right, you don't see it all the time there - that's where mine is, ironically with a butterfly to the left of it. I see it quite often in the mirror, a very nice reminder

Alty
Aug 4, 2008, 11:34 PM
I put mine on my ankle because I wanted to see it always.

Funny thing, I read a book once that had a character in it that was a tattoo artist. The question came up about tattoos and placement, is there a hidden meaning there. He said, in his experience, the more a tattoo means to someone the more visible it is to the outside world, usually the visible tattoos represent a loss, fear, something someone has overcome.

Not that it's true, I just found it interesting, thought I'd share.

My next one will be on my left shoulder. How about your shoulder or leg CM?

ChihuahuaMomma
Aug 4, 2008, 11:35 PM
I was thinking "gratitude" but it's a full bouquet of roses (NOW I know why they are carried by many brides)... But perhaps there is an alternative, single flower with the same representation.

So, this is what I came up with...
http://i35.tinypic.com/aeb8xt.jpg

ChihuahuaMomma
Aug 5, 2008, 12:06 AM
And the butterfly wouldn't have the stone, but instead be sapphire blue...

Alty
Aug 5, 2008, 12:07 AM
I like it allot, but I think a third flower with yellow in it would be better than the carnation, otherwise the carnation just stands out too much. Just my thought. :);)

ChihuahuaMomma
Aug 5, 2008, 12:09 AM
It's AND, not instead... they have different meanings... or do you mean the other flower suggested by someone else..

Alty
Aug 5, 2008, 12:12 AM
The other flower, because it was yellow, right? The other two have yellow in them, but the carnation is pink, it just stands out against the other two. If they all had yellow they would stand out on their own and not blend in to the background because of the carnation. Just my thoughts. I am an artist, so I do know a bit about contrast and colors, just my two cents. :)

ChihuahuaMomma
Aug 5, 2008, 12:14 AM
I think the white one, I would get another color...

Tralyn
Aug 5, 2008, 12:17 AM
I can't do the pic thing dangit. Venus looking glass is purple, either white or yellow in middle can't tell! Okay all - I'm pooped out! Check back soon... sweet dreams

ChihuahuaMomma

It's the 7th icon on the top of the gray box in which you are typing, and then you put your link in there...

However, I saw the purple looking glass

Alty
Aug 5, 2008, 12:18 AM
White would be good, that would go well. :)

I'm out too, bushed, it's 1am and my kids get up at the butt crack of dawn.

Night all. :)

Tralyn

It's going to be great no matter what you decide - there is so much thought and meaning behind this - very nice. I like the blue butterfly idea too... okay night now

ChihuahuaMomma
Aug 19, 2008, 10:15 AM
Thank you...

I'm thinking of maybe just the periwinkle ribbon. My friend suggested the ribbon in between my shoulder blades and then have it moved down to form a corset down my back.

Maybe the ribbon and one of the flowers?

kolkay

I think getting a tattoo to remember someone is a great memorial. I have 2 tattoos, one for my heritage and one for my grandma who made me what I am today. They give me hope.

Anyway, have you thought about his intials inside a heart? I know that is kind of the normal, but if you play around with sizes and colors it could be cool. Or maybe a flower with his initials by the vine. Was there something you two did together before he passed away that you can incorporate? Maybe even his zodiac sign or something he really loved, whether it's a hobby, sport or musical instrument.

ChihuahuaMomma
Aug 19, 2008, 05:50 PM
I don't want a heart with his intials, too predictable. And I've already answered the questions at the end of your post, please read back..

kolkay
Aug 19, 2008, 05:57 PM
I liked the idea you said earlier about getting "dad" or maybe even his initials with a quil. I like that you were thinking that because he was unique. People would ask about it and it would have a great story behind it. Did he have a nickname that people referred to him by often?

ChihuahuaMomma
Aug 19, 2008, 06:01 PM
Nope.

Tralyn
Aug 19, 2008, 07:47 PM
Hey there ChihuahuaMomma.. thinkin' Ribbon now? You do whatever feels right to you... Saucy idea.. the corset down the back. LOVE IT!! Keep me posted, still excited for you - I think new tattoos are soooooo great, and one with special meaning - of course! : )

ChihuahuaMomma
Aug 19, 2008, 11:29 PM
What do you think about the ribbon?

Tralyn
Aug 22, 2008, 04:25 PM
I am wondering if I lost something in these posts about the symbology of the ribbon? I love the moving it down to a corset idea - fricken cool - and super unique.

ChihuahuaMomma
Aug 22, 2008, 10:10 PM
The periwinkle ribbon is the national ribbon for Esophageal cancer.

Tralyn
Aug 22, 2008, 11:21 PM
I think it's a great idea, almost like a corset hug! : )

ChihuahuaMomma
Aug 23, 2008, 12:04 AM
Lol... I'm trying to think of a related idea to justify the corset part...

N0help4u
Aug 23, 2008, 08:05 AM
Have the corset part with 'Cherish the love DAD'

N0help4u
Aug 23, 2008, 10:15 AM
It was a song

Cherish the love
~dad

It would cover a lot of what you are saying in your post.

ChihuahuaMomma
Aug 23, 2008, 10:16 AM
Oh... no, I don't want words.

Tralyn
Aug 23, 2008, 11:59 AM
If you feel you need more justification for the corset than what it is already (the periwinkle ribbon) I would say that it isn't settling 100% with you and then you shouldn't do it. It's permanent, so you want to be sure : ) HMMMMMMMMM... what now?

Dawn92

I think that in the long run, I wouldn't imagine someone regreting a memorial tattoo.
I don't exactly know how much you love chihuahuas, but suppose someday you don't love them as much as you do know, but I bet you'll always love your dad, right?
I don't know, just my opinion. :]
I think memorial tattoos are sweet, and one of the best way to remember a loved one. :]
