Hello:

When I joined my current company, I received a sign on bonus and accepted to repay a part of it should I leave before completing 2 years.

Question: What about if my employer let me go? Do I have to repay the sign-on bonus?

Hereafter, an extract of the contract I signed:

"I understand that if I complete 2 full years of employment with XXX I am not obligated to repay any portion of the sign-on bonus"... "if I leave XXX before completing two yers of employment, I am obligated to repay a portion of the sign-on bonus ...."

Does "if I leave" apply in any situation or only if I resign? What about if my employer let me go?

Thanks!

You and they would be bound by the agreement - "If you leave" is not modified in any way so, yes, if they terminate you you must repay the bonus.

Very similar if not identical question on the legal board within the past 6 weeks. Same answer from several people.
