Getting the kids christened under his name won't legally change their last names. They can call him dad without having his last name, it's only a name and won't change anything.
If it's really that important to you then you'll have to go the route the lawyer suggested.
Good luck.

The Christening does not do anything from a legal view point, You will have to do a legal name change or try to get an adoption. This requires an attorney and going to court.

Were you married to your ex? Are the children registered with his surname? If so, you would need his permission (in most cases). If not, you would be better able to go ahead with a name change. Look into filing a deed poll... would be far less money than 1000 pounds and it may give you another option to make the changes you want to.

I think you can change the surnames if your partner adopts them.you could ask about this at a registry office.

The ex would have to agree to the adoption, if he doesn't then it's a no go.
