My cat had kittens about 14 weeks ago. We currently have 2 remaining kittens including the mother cat. THe mother cat just tonight has been acting very, very strange. She attacked both of her kittens this evening and my hubby literally had to throw something at her to get her off them. We then locked her up in her travel carrier for about 30min. She then seemed to calm down, and we let her out. She seemed to be okay, the kittens were nursing and everything seemed to be okay. NOT, she then attacked them again, and believe me when I say attacked, had we not been home the first time I think she would have killed them

Another thing we have noticed is when she pants you can see both her top teeth and bottom teeth, as she has never done this before...

Has anybody ever seen a mother cat attack their kittens, any suggestions or advice would be great.

Thank you,
The b'ron family:confused:

By 14 weeks she is tired of nursing them and really doesn't want to be bothered with them any more. I learned that after a few litters. Probably time to wean them and find homes.

I knew a family that had to get rid of their cat... she had 4 kittens and they were going to keep all of them including mom. 1 died and she was fine with the remaining 3 unitl they were old enough to wean. She started to attack them as well, but I will say she was weird anyway, a very high strung cat.

I think if she had rabbies the attacks would be on you as well as the kittens. She may be in heat or pregnant again.

A basic fact of predator life is that, once the young are old enough to survive on their own, mom tends to drive them out of her territory. After all, she's done her part by raising them to a stage where they can survive on their own. She needs to get rid of the competition so that she can attract a mate, get pregnant, have another litter, and have the resources to raise that litter. And that means that the last litter has got to go find a new spot to live in, so that she doesn't have any competition for resources or distractions from her new litter.

This happened to one of my old cats to. But after a while she started directing this to people to. Unfortunately even when we gave the kittens away it did not get better and we had to have her euthanized.
