If you are talking about teeth, then according to what I have experienced, then no, they aren't permanent.

When I was in the 5th grade, I was riding my bicycle in the wintertime. In the street, I swerved to avoid a manhole cover that was sunk down somewhat. I hit a patch of ice and my mouth hit the pavement! Very bloody situation!

Our dentist ground my two, front teeth down to what appeared to me to be next to nothing. He then put stainless steel crowns on each of them. It wasn't until many years later that I was able to have crowns put on them that looked like real teeth. I'm not really sure why we had to wait for the crowns that looked like real teeth.

It depends on how old your son is. Stainless steel crowns are usually used on baby teeth, however, some dentists will use them on adult teeth (not the ideal situation). If the stainless steel crown is on a baby tooth, it will fall out when the tooth does.
