An employee at my company was asked to resign because 'they' used the company's credit card to buy gas for their car and for other personal use. When confronted, the employee wrote an "I'm Sorry for stealing letter" to the boss. The employee was immediately asked to resign which they did. The employee is so bitter because they got caught, they are going all over town telling everyone who will listen that I am such a stupid employee that the company will fall apart since I've been asked to take this employee's position. This employee is telling a lot of lies and trying to ruin my name.

Can I sue for slander? Or for defamation of character?

Please advise.

You have to first prove they have been saying these things, then you have to prove that they are lies and finally, you have to prove been damaged by them.

It won't hurt to consult an attorney.
