Lets' say that I have $200 and as a new investor, I wanted to begin investing in a company whose shares cost $31.93. Would I multiply the $200 by the price and arrive at the exact number of shares I will have?

No?

You'd take 200 and divide by 31.93 and get 6.26... which is the number of shares you'll have.

Of course, this doesn't take into account the commission.
