Hello, My central air conditioner works fine un till the fan motor outside starts to slow down and stop. What I do is to go outside to the fan motor and push the blades forward , while kicking the breaker on un till it starts to speed up again. Am I going to have to get a new motor and how expensive is that.
Thank you in advance.

More than likely, it's the capacitor rather than the motor. Usually it's a dual capacitor.

I would say you have a bad motor, If the capacitor is bad, usualyy once you spin the fan blade the motor doesn't stop until the unit cycles. I would say you can pick up a universal motor for 100.00 to $150 dollars, if you hire a service man, the part will be marked up plus labor.

My blades would stop turning as well and the fan motor would hum but not turn. I too could get it going by spinning the blades and playing with the breaker. But a Tech told me that it was the motor. Then? Using the info on the side of the unit, I bought the wrong motor.. a 208/230.. when it was actually a 120.. so said the guy who put it on. He tried his best to modify the wiring on the 208 but after running several hours that new motor burned up. I am now trying to find the same old motor that came off. It is so old all the specs have faded off and all I have is a number on the motor. A General Eletrcic 5kcp39cg e9 62 s. The store that sold me the 208 was looking right at the old motor and sold me a non match. They had warned that with out knowing all the "Schitzs??" watts, amps.. volts.. etc. it may be the wrong one and non-returnable. I had no way of knowing those things to tell them. But I bought and tried it and now need to find the correct match for the GE Number I put above. So if anyone knows what the volts and stuff to match that part number is, I would appreciate it. Oh, the Fan Motor cost 135.00.
