Hi, I received a summons back in March of 08 for credit card debt and did not answer it. Last week I received a letter saying they entered a judgement against me. I do not owe all of the money they are claiming that I do. I do not know what any of this means and need to know if there is anything I can do? I live in New York State

When you are requeted to appear in court to "defend" yourself it is very important that you go. I believe it is too late. The objective would have been to attend the hearing and dispute the charges at that time. When you have a failure to appear the opposing party wins. Judgment granted. Now all you can do is pay! Sorry

The only chance you have of getting this set aside is if you weren't properly served - and you have already said you were. If the debt was out of statute you can attempt to get it set aside but sometimes the Court takes the position that it is too late to raise a defense.
They are entitled to what you owe plus costs and fees plus interest and that is probably why the amount is as high as it is.
They are now able to take whatever legal means are available to collect from you - garnishment, seizure of bank accounts, agreed upon payments (if they will consent to payments).
I know it's too late for you now but why didn't you answer or appear when you were served?
