I recently told a colleague about my medical condition and asked that he keep the conversation to himself. Several months later I found out that he did not and has told several other people in our work place. Is there any type of violation here?

It depends on your work place... for example, it would be a violation if I shared certain aspects of someone's health or medical condition when I am working at the hospital if it had no baring on the job I had to do. However, when I am teaching at school, if I share with a co-worker that another teacher has a medical condition, it would not be a HIPAA violation, but it would be a breach of trust on my part.

If you tell a friend, and he tells others, that is a matter of trust of your friend. If you told them as your medical provideer that is different

Nope, no violation whatsoever. Why? Because you volunteered the information and expected him to keep it private. If he looked up the info on his own, that would be a violation, but you volunteered, so, no violation.
