My question that I would like to know is: I have Alopecia. The doctor has given me injections in one of my bald spots already and I'm finding its not growing back yet. What are some things that I can take to help my hair grow back. Also I want to color my hair, but I'm not sure if it would be a good idea, considering one of my bald spots is very large and I have a few others that are getting that way as well.

Hi babyg79.

You say your doctor has given injections in your bald spots, but what does he say the cause is?.

NO.. I would not advise that you colour your hair just now, there are far to many chemicals in hair colours which can damage the hair further.

You need to be extra careful right now with anything that you may put on to your hair, treat it very gently, try not to use anything that will pull at the hair e.g... hair bands, having your hair braided, the use of rollers at night, heated hair tongs etc. etc...

You need to wait until the hair regrows and becomes strong again before you can attempt to put any strain on the hair folicals, they might become scarred and there is a possibility then, that the hair will not grow back.

Hair does fall out throughout it's growing cycle, usually regrowing about 1/4 inch per month, or there abouts, alopecia can be cause by many things, you don't say if your doctor has given you any information on this, but it can be due to all kinds of stress situations... after an operation, hormone balance, fungi of the scalp( usually a cream is perscibed for this called... Betnovate... which is massaged into the scalp.

It could also be caused by certain medication that you might have been taking, when the medication is stopped the hair will regrow.

If you've recently given birth, again it can be down to hormone balance.

Sometimes it can be for no obvious reason, as in the case of my daughter who was about 2years old at the time, she was given... Betnovate cream... which we used several times each day, after some considerable time (18 months) her hair did grow back beautifully.
This was many years ago, we were told that it would never grow but she could always wear a wig, how wrong they were, so don't worry, treat you hair very gently... no nasty chemicals, you just have to be patient and eventually you'll have a beautiful head of hair again.

I hope some of the info here has been useful, anything you do not understand speak to your doctor again, who I'm sure will be able to put your mind at rest.
