I'm looking for the name of a movie which is prior to 'Rain Man" 1988. It's a story of a young boy (age 3-6) who suddenly develops autism and his mom tries to find out everything regarding autism and special clinics. What I remember most is the son being on the kitchen floor twirling/flipping his hands. One part of the movie the mom tries to get him into a clinic/hospital which uses unusually rougher techniques to help autistic kids. I remember one part of the movie a dr./counselor was explaining to the mother what he thought autism was. I thought that the child’s name might have been David and did do a search but was unable to find anything even on imdb. Please help!

Could it be "David's Mother" with Kirsty Alley? It is after "Rain Man" but it depends on when you saw them.
