What is the purpose of the commutator in a dc motor? To convert ac to dc? To maintain undirectional current flow through the amateur, to provide a means of connection between upply and the armature, or to improve torque?

The commutator and the brushes provide a connection between supply and the armature, The position of the brushes insures each coil of the armature maintains proper magnetic polarity.
