Probably the same as all the other "End of the World" predictions, absolutely NOTHING.

These are only predictions and so not very reliable.

Nostradamus predicted nothing that will happen on that day, Einstein predicted nothing that will happen on that day, The bible predicts nothing that will happen on that day and the Mayan calender predicts nothing that will happen on that day. So I'm going with nothing.
I don't know what Cayce predicted on that day, but I would guess nothing too.

No one can accurately predict the moment of even one person's death, how can anyone predict the exact date of the end of the world.

If you look at some of the science that accompanies this prediction, there may be something to it.
The event referred to as the Galactic Alignment happens only every 26,000 years.
Unfortunately, there is no record of the last time this event happened.
The Mayan's were not the only ones to make reference to this event, there are references to it in Hopi myths, the I-Ching, Aztec writings, Egyptian hieroglyphs, Roman Oracles, writing of Seneca Elders, the chief Shaman of the Cherokee Tribe in NC, Nostradamus, even the writings of the Russian mathematician Sergey Semlyakov of Khartov University
Taking the constant Phi (1.1680339), the so called Golden Mean or the Fibonacci sequence, and applying it to solar activity and planetary orbits, found that everything seemed to spiral in on itself on December 21, 2012 implying a time of implosion or point of bifurcation.
Even NASA predicts that a terrific solar storm will hit the earth in 2012 and they report that it will be 30 to 50 percent greater than anything ever before.
Finally, the planet Venus is set to take a path across the face of the sun on December 21, 2012 which happens very infrequently. It did happen recently, however, on June 8, 2004 which means that it will happen again in only 8 years, which is very unusual, but was also predicted by the Mayans.
No one can really say what the results of all these events happening on that date will be, but with the history of them being mentioned, so far back in time, I'd say to just completely dismiss them as garbage without any possibility that "something" may occur, would be nieve at best.
Edited to include this afterthought: With the current situation in the world today, I believe it will be Man that causes the end of our own existence, and the chance that this could happen before 2012 are probably pretty darn good.

Wow and I thought that all that was going to happen was the space aliens would come though the time/space vortex and destroy the earth.

If that is a Sunday : I normally sleep at that time still, or read a book.
Maybe I should put the alarm on earlier, get a cup of tea for the misses and myself, have sex, call the kids to say hello. But what do I do the entire afternoon ?

Sorry Progunr - too much hokum, not enough science. Citing astrologers like Sergey Smelyakov doesn't add any credence. Nor does citing Nostradamus. Some specifc problems with your post:
Even NASA predicts that a terrific solar storm will hit the earth in 2012 and they report that it will be 30 to 50 percent greater than anything ever before.
Source please? There are predictions that the next maximum of solare activity may produce more than the usual number of susnpots, and hence a higher level of solar activity compared to the last maximum. However, there are disagrements as to whether that will occur in 2011 or 2012. I see no one of any repute specifically claiming to predict what the sloar activitry will be like precisely oinb Dec 21, 2012. See: NASA - Solar Storm Warning (http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2006/10mar_stormwarning.htm)
the planet Venus is set to take a path across the face of the sun on December 21, 2012 which happens very infrequently. It did happen recently, however, on June 8, 2004 which means that it will happen again in only 8 years, which is very unusual, but was also predicted by the Mayans.
The next transit of Venus across the Sun will take place on June 6, 2012, not Dec 21. The last transit did indeed occur in 2004. However, the 8-year interval between transits is not at all unusual - the typical pattern is for Venus to transit twice in an 8-year period followed by a hundred years or so before the next pair of transits. Thus the last 6 transits prior to the 2004 event were in the years 1631, 1639, 1761, 1769, 1874, and 1882. See:
NASA - 2004 and 2012 Transits of Venus (http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/transit/venus0412.html)
No one can really say what the results of all these events happening on that date will be, but with the history of them being mentioned, so far back in time, I'd say to just completely dismiss them as garbage without any possibility that "something" may occur, would be nieve at best.
Actually, the great galactic alignment started in 1998, so if something is going to occur it seems we already missed it. It will reach its midpoint in 2016, not 2012, and will be complete in 2034. So in the end there is no science at all to accompany predictions of what may occur on Dec 21, 2012.

I never heard the time of 11:11am. It would have made more sense to have it at 12:21am. If 11:11am is the case, I will go outside, look up at the sky with arms wide open... If nothing happens, I will go take advantage of the Wal-Mart 11:12am sale that will no dought be advertised. The savings on last minute X-mas items will be fantastic!

Of course when the Mayans were developing their calendar, which presumably "ends" in what in the modern era we call the year 2012 (and is the basis of all this nonsense about the end of the world), they knew nothing about how our calendar works with its 12 months per year, or 24 hours in a day, or 60 minutes in an hour. So the concepts of 12/12/12 and 12:12:12 would have meant nothing to them.

I agree, it doesn't make "sense" (the whole world ending thing doesn't make "sense"), but it's more... entertaining when the numbers all match up.

And why does the universe care that we use 60 minute hours and 24 hour days? How does that even start to make sense?

And why does the universe care that we use 60 minute hours and 24 hour days? How does that even start to make sense?
Because of the rotation of our planet. We have 24 hour days and 365.33333> long years.
I have a question for you,, Mr. Science expert. How many days does it take the Earth to make a complete revolution around the sun? Has nothing to do with leap years. And,, GO.

A sidereal year is 365.2564 days long, since you didn't specify which kind of year we are measuring, I'll assume you meant sidereal.
Now a question for you. What about the rotation of the planet splits our days up into 24 hours? Why are hours split up into 60 minutes? (this is what I asked you before.. )

Hello sunnygirl16
Based on the astronomic data I neither think the world will end on December 21, 2012 at 11:11 Am, and I am prepared to purchase property for a fair price for both parties involved, paid in advance, with changing property rights at December 21, 2012 at 11:11 Am precisely. So let me know if you are interested to sell.
Consider what may be meant with "the world would end" : the complete disappearance of planet earth is most unlikely.
A huge collision with an asteroid than for planet earth? The astronomical data say no to that.
A smaller collision with big extinctions of life on earth? Again : most unlikely.
Extinction of human life and mayor other life forms than? Present available data say otherwise.
As long as there is no system in place that allows to protect planet earth from major asteroid impact there always is a chance that there will come extinctions similar to what happened in the past.
Every 64 Million years we may expect an impact on earth resulting from the consequences and influences resulting from the solar system dipping through the galaxy disk, and on a different time scale from the solar system jumping galaxy arms.
As to warning people for impacts : I fear that that would have great influence on human (dis)behavior, with major social upheaval for months on end, and times during which the worst in people' conduct would surface.
So that's no good idea : if we can not protect earth, than only warn people as late as possible (days instead of weeks or months in advance).
As to all these predictions : Nostradamus, The Mayan Calender, Edgar Casey, Albert Einsteins Bee Disapearance Statement, The Bible, etc. etc. etc. : most of us love some mysteries and mystic.
But that does not provide any validity to all these "the world will end" claims.

Personally, I like Cecil Adam's cut on Nostradamus. The Straight Dope: Was Nostradamus really able to predict the future? (http://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/45/was-nostradamus-really-able-to-predict-the-future)
Come to think of it, why is this question under the "Astronomy" section??

Hello FlyYakker
Cecil Adams post is spot on. Post hundreds of vague predictions and some of them are sure to fit more or less some event in the future. Even if people have to bend over backwards to fit a prediction to an event.
Many people simply will do anything to believe predictions.
As to astrology questions on this board : I have asked that same question many times here. It may be related to the link many people draw between scientific astronomy and paranormal astrology. Even early astronomers often combined these 2 fields to allow them to butter their daily bread!

According to the mayan calender it actually means the end of an age, we are in the age of pisces at the moment (our solestiar rotation within the galaxy or some such), after this date we will be within the age of aquarius, mayan translation was end of Age, not end of Days, research it..
As for propechys, there are a lot of stupid things flying around the internet of "what will happen".. try Google and see which makes you laugh the most.
Here are but a few...
-1) End of the world
-2) our evolutionary step
-3) aliens making their presence known (in none violent ways)
-4) aliens conquering the planet and using us for their... deeds
-5) return of the mesiah, jesus christ
-6) same as 1) only via catastrophies such as..
--a) Pol Axis flipping creating a new ice age (also known as the real reason for global warming - cough)..
--b) mega hurricane\tidal waves..
--c) all the good stuff you see in today's hollywood epics
-7) world war III
-8) the big bang experiment creates a blackhole after testing and swallows the earth -(farely new one!)
-9) Meteorite\Asteroid colliding with our planet..
10) Nothing atall..
Its only 2009, so I'm sure plenty of crazy new ideas will surface before the time comes  - perhaps Reality TV will bore us all to death? :D
Oh, this is also my first post, and perhaps my last, so I would just like to say, Hi, hope this was interesting\entertaining, and Good Luck for 2012!

These type predictions tend to be based on misinterpretations and fabrications by people who WANT them to predict something - not on any facts. Why such people want to mess with other people's minds is the only mystery here.
