A debt NEVER expires. And its possible your settlement offer restarted the SOL.

SOL is Statute of Limitiations. It's the time frame by which a creditor has to initate a suit to collect on a debt. Generally this goes by the last activity on the account. An offer of payment may be considered activity.

So there is no way around this? I need to pay the amount they tell me?

You can make a counter offer, but they don't have to accept anything less than full payment.
