I arrived in Maine on Tuesday, June 10 to visit grandparents. They have outdoor cats but I have been her many times before and nothing like this has ever happened.
Yesterday, I started getting little itchy bumps of what I thought were mosquito bites. They looked and acted just the same. They itch, I scratch, and they stopped itching after a while and shrunk down. But more and more are popping up everywhere! On my ankles, elbows, hip, back, neck, legs, knees, and arms! They itch sooo bad and now they swell up so badly! One of these bumps is right next to my knee, and its as big as my knee cap! My whole ankle is swollen! I think these happened shortly after I went to the beach! But I didn't go swimming, I collected some sand and shells. Ive tried benadryl creams and gels and they only last a few minutes!
What is wrong with me? What are these?
EDIT:
I should also add that only my joints, except for a couple bumps on my arm, are being affected. About a year ago my hamster bit me and there has been a hard spot there ever since and it had never really bothered me, but now it hurts!

If you were in Florida I would say you had sea lice which is another word for baby jellyfish stings. You could possibly have something like this as well. Please go see a dr so he can properly diagnose you. And no, it does not sound like hives as hives are usually not all over your body. Does anyone else have these symptoms or is it just you? You could also be a victim of "no-seeums". I have had that and it is not pleasant.

It is just me who has the symptoms. I can't go to a dr. because my grandma does not have a pediatrician.. oral benadryl has helped me for a little while now. They do look like some sort of bug bite but after a while they swell up to INCREDIBLE sizes!

Sounds to me like you may have gotten bitten by sand fleas at the beach. How long have you had them now? Your gramma doesn't need a pediatrician, any doctor will do. Does she have a family practice doctor nearby?

Ive had them for a day. The only places that touched the sand were my hands, but these are all over my body and more and more keep popping up. Im leaving Maine tomorrow and going to Boston too.. so its too late now!

Okay, well we know it is not chicken pox, lol, we took care of that last year. Are you taking any other medications?

Go to the doctor. It's probably hives or some type of allergic reaction. Whatever u do in the meantime, try to use cold clothes to put over them to stop the itching and don't stress about them... stressing about hives make them worse and pop up more.

Also take some Benadryl until you get to the doctor.

Can it be bed bug bites.

I don't think its any type of bug bite or allergic reaction. I really think that something is attacking my joints. My mom says it might be juvenile arthriitis. Can arthritis cause severe itching?

Arthritis won't cause hives hun.
Hives and itching are a symptom of some sort of allergic reaction. Whether it be a new food, medication, or bug bites.

So I do have hives then? Im just really worried. I think I jynxed myself.. my last trip I went to Boston for my uncle's wedding and I was pmsing and was very sick.. I told myself this was going to be the best trip ever because I wouldn't be sick and now this happens!

Sweetie, since I can't see the bumps, I can't properly diagnose them as hives.

I can't take a picture because I don't have a camera and I left my usb cable for my camera phone at home.
I really don't think it's an allergic reaction because its getting worse. Its spread to all my finger joints and my thumb is swollen and painful and now my throat is sore and my chest hurts. It feels like there's a lump in my throat and chest.
The inside of my ears itch as well now. I'm extremely worried. Everyone tells me it's nothing serious but I just can't relax.

If it is affecting your breathing it is important that you go to the emergency room at once.

Whatever it is - it's not normal. Go to a doctor and get it checked out make sure it's not a staff infection or anything in the knee area because those can be deathly. If you don't have a doc out there go to a free clinic

This has all the earmarks of possible anaphylactic reaction. That means a severe life threatening allergic reaction.
Please get emergency medical attention at once.

I am almost positive it is scabies and don't let the doc tell you that cause it isn't on your hands it isn't , it is they are worst at night ithing you to death , cause the are burrowing under the skin , look it up on the net at the picture of the rash and bumps I know ! Its awful I had it you can get them from trying on clothes at a store that someone else that had them tried on , but if you were at the beach , they like the sand and stuff I hope this helps

Mandy, I took the symptoms of tightness of chest and throat, among the spreading of the hives. If you read the entire thread, you will also note that she is on antibiotics. Antibiotics are very well known for anaphylactic reactions, as well as shellfish. She is on the coast right now and if she is eating shellfish, this could be the culprit also.
Scabies will not affect the respiratory system in the manner that this OP is being affected.

J_9, My throat is sore but my chest does not hurt anymore. My fingers are swelling but the itching is easily treated by benadryl liquid or aveeno cream. I am positive they are bite marks- after the swelling and redness goes away I see tiny little scabs. My uncle thinks I was bit by sand fleas. I did touch sand on the beach and then rub it off on my clothes- he thinks they hitched a ride on my clothing and bit me. I have not gotten any new bites since I have left Maine, (I am in Boston now with my aunt and uncle), but my left pinky and right middle finger have randomly swollen up since I left. Also, it is mostly affecting my feet and ankles, which fleas go after the most, and my other joints, which fleas also enjoy because the think skin is closer to the veins. I was freaking out over these symptoms and my grandma thinks the chest pain was from anxiety. I don't know why my fingers are swelling though. I really think it was the fleas. Your opinion?
EDIT:
I've also been taking these antibiotics for a while. The allergic reaction would have started sooner, wouldn't it? They start 10-20 minutes after you come in contact with the allergen, right? If my throat were going to close up, that also would have start sooner right?
oh and also, I hate shellfish.

As I said in my first response to you... it sounds like sand fleas. I have experienced them firsthand.
Most of the time you will experience a reaction to antibiotics right away, yet other times, especially if it is a new allergy, it can take days for the allergy to flare up.
But, again, I believe it is sand fleas.

OK, so if it's sand fleas, what do I do? Will the bumps go away on their own? What about my finger swelling? Because I keep getting more fingers swelling up but no more itchy bumps

OK the swelling is all gone but what do I do about the bites? I washed all my clothes in case any fleas were hiding in them

Take cool oatmeal baths, just like you did with the chickenpox last year. And keep using benadryl, it should go away soon.

Tehe thanks! They're doing much better now. I'm still itchy but they don't swell up anymore. My grandma says flea bites stay itchy for a little while. True?

I'm back home. I'm almost 100% sure I was bit by sand fleas because I was looking at the bag of shells I collected and there was definitely some dead fleas in there. Thanks so much again :)
