I have a 2002 altima 6cyl. 3.5 auto trans. The service engine light came on as did the oil light. I had it serviced since it was do anyway. When I got the car back the light was still on. The mechanic said it may be the "Timing Contor Solenoid". Any one know what this is. It was not easy communicating with the mechanic so Im just reading of the repair order form. (the oil light did turn off)

The service light will go off by itself in due time. I had the same problem and the mechanic told me that the service light will go off after starting your car a certain amount of times (based on the number that is set in the control unit. I thought the mechanic was crazy but it did go off after I drove for about 3-4 days of starting the car.

Your service engine light indicates that there is a component part that is not functioning within its specifications. Denemiah's advice is partially true. The light will reset after a certain number of drive cycles IF all components are functioning properly. If the part needs replacement, the light will stay on until it is replaced. You need to have a diagnostic scan performed to pinpoint the problem.
