I read on the internet that its harmful for a dog to give him a worm pill if he doesn't have worms, is this true, because I used to get my dog dewormed every month not because he had worms but to prevent him from having them, kind of like a flea treatment.

It is true... The only worm treatment you should be giving your dog every 1-3 months is for heartworm.

The truth is, heartworm remedies such as Heartgard+ and Revolution contain ingredients that also treat for other worms. I hadn't used any other worm medicine for years until a fecal check this year turned up whip worms.

Unless you are in one of the isolated areas free of heartworm, you should be using a heartworm remedy monthly which also eliminates many other kinds of worms, and some of them double as flea prevenatives. Then have a stool sample checked once or twice a year and do any other treatment needed.

We have a bad whipworm problem in our area. Most of us here use Interceptor, which is a heartworm preventative that also takes care of rounds, hooks and whips. It doesn't get tapeworms, but you usually see those in the stool if the dog has them.
