I am being sued in NY Civil Court for just over $3,000. The summons to appear in court was mailed to me and states that I have 20 days to appear. Is there anyway that I can avoid physically appearing? Can I write to the attorney and try to settle with some type of payment plan?

You can try to settle prior to the court hearing, otherwise, you have to appear. Either way you need to at least answer the summons.
