How long to you have to press charges against a person.

Depends on the crime, for some simple theft ( small amount) it can be a year, for some crimes 3 for some 7 years, some things may not have a time frame.
The longer you wait, the worst the case is, After a long enough time frame the police will turn over all the evidence to the DA, who will decide if they want to try and go to trail. So even if you press charges, it does not always mean the other person is arrested.
