Go to the system control panel /device manager and find the make and model of the current drive. You will need to know the kind of drive SATA, ATA, I think ATA has been depreciated and is now called PATA for Parallel ATA. SATA is Serial ATA.
5400 RPM means that the drive spins at 5400 Revolutions Per Minute. Lower speed drives are used because of lower ppower requirements and longer battery life. 7200 RPM is common is desktops and drives up to 10,000 RPM are available. Higher RPM's means that the programs will load faster, the power requirements are higher, battery life shorter and lifetime (Mean Time Before Failure) may be shorter. It's a spec you generally don't have to meet.
A 2.5" form factor means the drive fits in a 2.5" space. The thickness of the drive bay can vary in a laptop, so you usually can't exceed this dimension. There are exceptions.
So, find the make and model of your drive and go from there. If your going to be replacing the drive, consider some drive cloning software and an external USB adapter that will allow the drive to operate naked outside the case, so you can transfer everything.
There may be jumpers that have to be set for the new drive that match the old one.
