Is there anything that I can do to make my chihuahua relax so that I can trim her nails? I usually take her for a really long jog, so she's tired when we get home and I can trim them and she's mellow and then goes to sleep. But now she tires me out, and is even more energetic when we get home.
Is a little nyquil bad for her? I know it sounds horrible, but her nails are getting pretty long, she poked herself in the eye scratching her ear earlier today...

This is how we trim MILs little chi. One person holds her another gives her a treat... makes her take little bites at a time and the other one cuts her nails. Yes it takes 3 of us. My FIL says bull crap! Mamma doesn't want to upset her.

Please don't give her alcohol (Nyquil). Just be matter-of-fact and non-nonsense-y and firmly pick up each paw to clip. Tell her a doggy story while you do it. Even if you do one paw a day, that's better than stressing out both of you. The same works for our cats.

Unfortunately its just me. So there is no one to help me trim her nails..

You could always take her to a groomer. My next door neighbors do. They take theirs to a place that sits, boards and grooms. They charge them 5 dollars. Call around and see how much they charge in your area.

The cheapest I have found is $11, I did that when she was a baby. That's the reason I do it myself now.

That is expensive. I think I would let her get tired and sleepy and do them myself even if like wonder said only a few at a time.

Yeah, that's what I was planning. But I don't want to wait until then I want to get it done now. I want to give her a bath and don't want her to leave long scars in my arms :P
But yeah, that's what I'll do, thanks guys.

Look on the net for tips on trimming cat nails. You can wrap the chi in a towel so that only one paw sticks out, trim the paw, rewrap, repeat. The towel keeps them from being able to squirm around.
