My one-year old female chihuahua is draggin her bum on the carpet. Is she doing this just to scratch?

She probaby has worms. Look in her poo, but they do not always show up there. Also you will have to check it more than once. Your best bet would be to take her to the vet for a fecal exam. My neighborhood had a outbreak of tape worms last spring.Bum scooting was one of the signs.

NOOOOOOO!!

Not worms! I don't have a job, is there a way to treat worms at home, if she does have them??

Also, what is the cause of a doggy getting worms?

It could be worms, but also it could be that her anal sacs are bothering her.. yes dogs have anal sacs, they got it from the wolves, they secrete this awful smelling odor to claim their territory. And sometimes it gets a little swollen and it irritates it.. a lot of Vets like to squeeze the sacs from time to time to release pressure, but when I worked at a vet hospital my old boss said he didn't like doing that because it just irritated the sacs even more and you just had to keep draining them.. it's not much to worry about

I know for a fact she does not have fleas. I'm not worried about that...

I'm hoping it has something to do with her anal sac, that really is very gross... LOL.

She's only been doing this for two days.

Take a sheet of kleenex and place the sheet over her anus. Using your thunb and first finger one on each side, gently squeeze like your trying to squeeze her hole shut. Probably get some liquid out. Once it is unplugged and drained, she should be good to go. By feeling around her anus on both sides you can also feel for what appears to be a lump. That is the sac full and plugged up. Very common on many breeds of dogs.

But be careful like I said! Draining it causes more problems, do it if you feel like it's really swollen but if it doesn't seem like a problem don't squeeze.

Oh and just an fyi- the anal sac smells HORRIBLE!! Lol it smells like a mixture of vomit, skunk, poop and decaying flesh.. worst thing I've ever smelt!!

I wonder how much the vet would charge for doing it.

Proly the cost of an examination.. around 50 bucks.. if you're going to go there for the anal sacs and you have to pay for the exam, just have him do the whole exam on your dog and mention that she has anal sac problems and the vet will determine if it needs to be squeezed

I don't have money for that right now.

Well I suggest you wait it out before you go an irritating the anal sacs more.. just leave it alone.. you will regret it if you squeeze them it will make more of a problem

If you are going to express her anal glands, put her in the bathtub, aim her butt away from you, and for heaven's sake, don't try to look at what you're doing!! If they are really full they can shoot anywhere and any direction! You cannot get the smell out of your hair (or clothes, eyebrows, etc etc etc) the rest of the day... ask me how I know...

More than a groomer. Anal sacs are the most likely problem. They are best not messed with by the untrained.
