My 1 month and 2 week old son has been spitting up and about every other week throwing up. There as been a little blood in both, which I think may have been from a cold. Since he never had a high enough fever the Doctors didn't seem to take it too seriously. We did get him in and do an ultra sound on his stomach and they said it looked good. We are on formula number 5 and it seems like every time we change it he is good for a few days then he starts to cry again. He is not a big crier so that is why I am concerned. He was really sick on lactose milk, a little sick on non-lactose milk, which made his poops really hard followed by a runny one. Now he is on a formula that removes a milk protein and is suppose to help with colic babies. He is also on Previcid for acid refluxs. On this new formula he is having really really runny poops that come out kind of fast. He seems more fussy than before and he has a harder time falling asleep. Can we never win? Does anyone know anything about this? Any hints or ideas? Should I try another Doctor? I feel like I am at a dead end and just maybe need some support from others who may know. Thanks!

Oh how my heart goes out to you! If you do not get good results or answers, definitely try a second opinion. You and your baby need answers. Many years ago with my first child, she did not tolerate any formulas we tried. Our pediatricion finally put her on Pet Milk mixed with dark Karo Syrup. I don't remember the amounts of each per bottle. It smelled nasty to me but her tummy settled, later she was able to get on a formula and was OK. Similac was a no go, then others, ended up on Infamil I think after the Karo and Pet Milk. They may not make those formulas any longer but thought I would mention them.

Point being, if there is a physical problem, not being caused by the formula, you need to know and if it is the formula, the doctor needs to continue until he/she comes up with an answer that provides nutrition and settles his tummy.

Five formulas in one month seems excessive, like the doctor is grabbing at straws. The blood is what concerns me. Please sit down with your pediatrician and tell him/her your concerns. Ask what options are left to you. If you do not feel in your heart you are getting help, get another opinion. Ask around and friends should be able to recommend a pediatrician that they really trust and would probably go with you and I suggest you write down everything that has been tried for how long each time and the results of each. If possible take other test results for that doctor to view. Best to you and your precious little one. You both are probably just exhausted. I hope you have a good support system at home.

There will be others post helpful advice soon. :)

Always listen to your ped first, but what worked with my son who suffered from severe reflux was soy formula mixed with a small amount of rice cereal( so that it is still liquid) and some Karo syrup. You may need to open the nipple up a little more on your bottle. But the rice helps to hold down the formula and the karo helps with the bowels... good luck.

I don't know if you will be able to find this were you are, I got mine from Germany, my mom brought it back from a visit. It's called Fenchel tee, it's a tea for babies, it's main ingredient is fennel which is a herb that settles your tummy. It worked wonders for my son who had colic, it might help with your baby.

I would still get a second opinion, the constant vomiting and loose stool is not good, the doctors need to get to the bottom of this and find out what's going on. It could be a simple allergy and just a matter of finding the right formula, but it does need be looked at and taken seriously.

Good Luck.
