No... that's NOT true. I can bet your mom got upset - the child support is to support the child - something that she should have had help with while you were growing up, instead, she had to support you herself... if your dad were to file taxes and get a refund, those would /should get intercepted and sent to your mother. Perhaps she should check with the child support agency and see where the case stands!

No, the child support is your mom but every year she does not collect, she will have less due, each state has its own laws that have to do with the statue of limitation for collection of the debts, but since you are 25 it is already 8 years past the last payment ( if it ended at 18) So it is very possible that your mother can no longer collect anything at this point.

Hey,
I am not sure of the local laws or every other law in your area. But my feeling is that the money should be for you and especially if you are going to college. If not it would be exposed for what it really is.
I have lived in other countries in South America. Out there if you want to buy a house, the entire family is helping you. You contribute to the family on many levels. It is much more close and meaningful. If you have a friend you have a real friend for life no matter what you have or don't have. Family and God are the family fabric and family is very tight. Where we live here, families are not tight and destroyed due to money, entitlement of money, morally bankrupt society and the lack of the true God living in us. When I grew up in the L.A. area, it was far too common to see a kid go home, not say hi to his parents, go to the Nintendo or Xbox and veg out until the same process is repeated tomorrow. The parents don't care, the kids in turn don't care and this is the future of our country if there is one.
The back support issue you mention may show what is deep inside your mother's heart. If I had the past money coming in this situation, I would ensure that this amount would add to your quality of life. The entire message of child support is not solely about children but human capital as well. The question must be asked, if you were to use this money would it pay for your college? Would it provide you with living, transportation and food expenses? If so, that was the intention. If your mom was to get this money would it be used for only her and her uses for it?
Good luck Sic, I hope your future has assistance - God Bless

Since you ARE 18 years old the money should go to you.

Check state laws.. in many states, child support will never be wiped, but it will go to your mom, not you.

My dad tried to give me the back child support that he owed my mom. It would've been nice to get that money but, I do feel that it should go to my mom. She worked her butt off trying to support us kids by herself and she could use that back support to pay off some of the debt she incurred while raising me and my siblings

Child support is money to be used to raise a child, since the mother used all of her own money for rent, food, clothes, medical care and so on, the back support is to go to the mother to pay her for her past expenses.

The money is to be paid to the mother by the court order, not to the child.
