I came across a 5 dollar bill from 1953. It says series 1953 A. It has a red seal and red serial numbers. There is a red star in front of each serial number and the letter A after. The names are Priest and Anderson. Treasurer and Secretary of Treasury. The serial # is... star 08287916 A. It has a fold right down the center of Lincolns head, edges look good. It looks a little used but in all I would say in good condition. Just wondering if its worth anything. Thanks

I see on eBay where the current bid on one that is similar to yours, although they names might not be exactly the same, is $5.00. 1953 United States RED SEAL $5.00 Bill PERFECT Shape! - eBay (item 110247780789 end time May-02-08 21:48:43 PDT) (http://cgi.ebay.com/1953-United-States-RED-SEAL-5-00-Bill-PERFECT-Shape_W0QQitemZ110247780789QQihZ001QQcategoryZ3044 QQcmdZViewItem) However, what it is worth will greatly depend on its condition and what someone would be willing to pay for it.
I do hope that Flying Blue Eagle will be along to address your question, because he has the current pricing information on currency items of this nature and also really knows how to address questions of the type that you have asked.

Angelo244b - I haven't forgoten you Ive been going through some books on this subject ,sop that I can give you the whole truth on this bill, Whene it comes to this kind its kind of hard to get all the right information , Ive just about got it all compilled and should have it for you tomorrow night :::
I'm going to give you some informatio now ::: " the star is placed by the serial # when there has been a change in the design of the bill ( FRONT OR BACK ) OR there has been a change in ,one or both signaturesor when during printing a bill is messed up someway and theu catch it, the note is destroyed and same serial # is used for another new one ,but a STAR is placed with the serial # , If a piece of paper money comes back into the TREASURY, and is messed up ( TORE <SOME OF BILL GONE < ECT>ECT> that bill is destroied and new one made with same serial # but has the RED STAR ::::
Back in early 1800's several pieces of paper money was first used with the red star around the border as design decorrations , then latter was used as a design to indicate what I just wrote above< ON bank notes the seals were RED Serial # were RED , Some of them had different designs that were RED ON front and back sideTHE number of the bank was Red. This is part of the history of this type of paper money:::
OUT THERE there is collectors that collecting the star notes is quite a hobby in it self, and to them they are very vauleable, more so to them then to just a reg. collector , A lot of the time it is because they are trying to fill up a set to complete it ( THE SET ) ::::
When it comes to selling ( coins or paper money, It is not the value put in the books alone, It is just how valuable is it to that person, and how much are they willing to pay for the item, AND DOES HE WANT IT TO COMPLETE A SET OR SOMETHING< ) Lets use this as an example - I have a Lincoln wheat penny collection and I have all but say a 1953S penny and you have one , it will complete my collection of the LINCOLN WHEAT PENNYS . Book value on it is 1.25, but you won't sell it to me that cheap ,I may then offer you $10.00 for it and you say nope ,I want it very bad and I give you another offer and say $30.00 ,and you say $50.00 And Then I say I'll take it :: Or at a actuion old coins and paper money go pretty high ,way above there book valueBUT someone wants it real bad , and the other person at the beginning does also but as bidding keeps going the one person says he wants it bad , I'm goping to make him really pay high for it and it happens So if you put it on EBAY bidding ,just watch the bidding and you will be able to see what I mean and you will know if it is going to sell high or low, I will say this ( Don't GIVE IT AWAY< WIll Good Night for now and GOD BLESS ::: F.B.E.

Take your time FBE. I have googled and yahooed and used a search engine that uses 4 OTHER search engines and I can't find a doggone thing out about this bill. I have found a lot of stuff but so far nothing that looks like this one. So take your time, its not going anywhere and most likely will end up in a protective cover in storage with some old coins I have. I love to look at these things and wonder who held them, where they had been etc. Thanks for your help so far!

Justcurious55 - I guss the best way to explane it is . ( Saving old or even new coins or paper money is I guess like anything else, Some people collect baseball cards others football, basketball cards, some even cards on raceing, milatary.salt and pepper shakers ( MY MOTHER IN LAW HAD OVER 800 DIFFERENT sets, some collect dishes, glassware, old clocks, old cars, It's kind of a hobby, I got started collecting coins when I was a cub scout as a requirement for a badge, I had to have a hobby of my choosing, I got so I really ENJOYED IT so I kept it up . TO see the difference in coins ,the grades, kinds the art wiork on them, and most of all THE HISTORY OF THEM<AND THE HISTORY OF THE TIME THEY CAME FROM. A lot of people would be surprised on how much the new state quarters have increased in value, some as much as 800 % , You try to get them low in cost and when they have increased quite a bit in value you sell them for a big profit. ( I DON"T )) im saveing mine collection for my two son's and one of my Grandson's that I have gotten interrestered in coin collecting. To me it is really a thrill when I see and hold a coin that is really old, I let a freind hold one of my coins that is almost 300 years old, dated 1739, it gave him such a thrill , you would have to exper. it top really know just what I mean. When you hold you wonder about who has held that coin over all these years& where all it's been. This coin is a british coin, called ( A FARRTHING ) It took 4 of them to make one british penny, it is almost the same size as our old half dollars were. IT was found by a good friend that lives down in allabama , He said he was plowing up his garden to get ready to plant and turned it over with the tiller, and it is in very good shape. The next time you are in walmart, go to the book section ,pick up a coin book and just look threw it or buy one , it is really interesting when you get into it, talk to "CLOUGH" he can give you his thoughts on this also > AND another thing someday america is going to be like europe, a lot of the different countrys over now use the " EURO" for there money, this country is turning into the plastic country, in the future no money , ( JUST A PLASTIC CARD, and with a coin collection then, our great grandchildren will be able to see some of our history that you and I & Everyone else that is living now & in the past what it was like now. :: I hope I have answered your question, If I can be of any more help ,just post it< With F.B.E. on it . ::: Have a good day ,good luck7 GOD BLESS,::::F.B.E.

Hello everyone, I have seen that this post has gotten a few views. FBE is helping with my question BUT if anyone else knows ANYTHING about this bill please post an answer. I'm sure its not worth much but like I posted in the past I have tried to find out SOMETHING on this bill and haven't seen anything else like it. I would like to get an idea of what we have here, I can send an email with a scan of it if needed. Thanks!

Angelo244B - Here is what I have on the note you have..
Searies 1953 A > $ 5.00 " UNITED STATES NOTE " RED SEAL, RED SERIAL NUMBERS , SIGNATURES - PRIEST & ANDERSON
" Some history on these notes "
They first came out in 1862 and lasted until 1966
EARLIER ones actually say " TREASURY NOTE " In fact the VERY FIRST notes " OMIT BOTH " They were the longest lasting kind of AMERICAN MONEY < BEING ISSUED FOR OVER A CENTURY FROM 1862 Until 1966 :: YOU KNOW WHAT STAR NOTES ARE AND WHY < JUST REMEMBER THAT STAR NOTES ARE MORE VAULABLE THEN REG NOTES < USEALLY DOUBLE OR MORE THEN REG NOTES ::
HERE IS THE VALUE OF THE ONE YOU HAVE
GOOD-$ 7.50 :: VERY FINE- $ 9.00 :: UNC-$35.00 :: *UNC $ 90.00
Above is if it has a red star at beginning of serial number ( *UNC )
HOPE this helps, and answers your questions on the note . Remember that this was out of a 1999 book , I haven't found it in a latter book yet , But I will let you know as soon as I find a latter date :: Good Luck and GOD BLESS :: F.B.E.

Are you certain it's a 1953 note and not a 1957 note? The reason I ask is that (Robert B.) Anderson didn't serve as Secretary of the Treasury until July 29, 1957. He succeeded George M. Humphrey who had served since January 1953 until replaced by Anderson.
I also have a star $5 red seal United States Note from 1953, series A and the signators are Ivy Baker Priest (Treasurer of the U.S.) and George Humphrey (Secretary of the Treasury).

Hey I wasn't alive then so I can only rely on whatever records I can locate.
The U.S. Treasury web site says Anderson wasn't Sec of Treas until 1957.
U.S. Treasury - Biography of Secretary Robert B. Anderson (http://www.ustreas.gov/education/history/secretaries/rbanderson.shtml)
Wikipedia says Anderson wasn't Sec of Treas until 1957
Robert Bernard Anderson - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Bernard_Anderson)
Even his obituary in the NY Times says he was Sec of Treas from 1957-1961
ROBERT B. ANDERSON, EX-TREASURY CHIEF, DIES AT 79 - New York Times (http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=950DE5DF1239F935A2575BC0A96F9482 60)
And... and this is as good as it gets, I have a 1953-A red seal U.S. $5 note and Humphrey's signature is on it as Sec of Treasury. I couldn't read the signature but it didn't look like "Anderson" so I did some research to see who Sec of Treas in 1953. The signature is definitely Humphrey.
So, either all of my sources are incorrect and the Treasury printed a 1953 note with the prophetic listing of Anderson as Sec of Treasury... or the books you possess are incorrect and Angelo244b is mistaken.
The only other possibility... and this seems far-fetched... is that it is customary for the Treasury to print paper currency in a later year with a previous year actually appearing on the note.
I'd love to see a scanned image of Angelo244b's note. He might have a real collectible. Can we solve this mystery?

Angelo, the only way to insert an image is to provide a link to the image residing on another site. There are numerous photo hosting sites that you can subscribe to for free. I use Photobucket.com.
Once you create an account and upload the image to your Photobucket album, you can "post" it here by inserting a link to the image. First, reply to a message (or create a new one). Then click on the icon of a square postcard showing a 2-peak mountain under a yellow sky immediately above the text input window. Click on it and you'll be prompted to provide the URL (web address) to the image you want to insert. Photobucket lists the text for a direct link below the image once it's been uploaded to your album.

FBE... Ooops, Yes, I mistakenly ID'd my bill as a 1953A rather than a 1953, but as you acknowledged, that doesn't solve our mystery. Unless 1953A's were printed in 1957 (when Anderson became Sec of Treasury) I can't see how his signature can be on a 1953 or 1953A bill - - unless the engraver was a clairvoyant. :p

You can post an image directly from somewhere on your computer. I usually keep those that I want to post on this site in a folder on my desktop entitled, "Images to Post on Ask Me Help Desk." It doesn't have to be a link to another site, and it would be preferred if you would post directly on a thread here. It's not hard. jrebel7 has great instructions for doing so. Hi there Angelo244b,
Clough let me know you would like information on how to resize and post images. I tend to be an "A to Z" person so please don't be offended by my step by step. I may post on two posts. I type like I talk... a lot! LOL
Have you saved these images to a file on your computer? You should have a file perhaps 'MY PICTURES" where you can save images. If the images are attachments on your e-mails, you should be able to left click to choose each, right click and and it will give you the option to open or save as. Click on "Save As" and it will give you the options of where you can save it.....you should see My Documents, My Music, My pictures, etc. Best to save in "My Pictures" as a .jpg file. If you click on My Documents, you should see as you scroll down, a yellow folder that says "My Pictures" on the list. Open that folder to "Save your image as" and type in name then click enter. It will save it in that folder.
Bring up "MY PICTURES" folder where you image is saved. Left click on image once (this chooses it, does not open it) then right click on it. Run your cursor over "OPEN WITH", it should show you several choices...if you see Microsoft Photo Editor, left click to open. Your image will show up in that program on your screen. At the top of that screen, you will see File, Edit, View, Image, etc. Left click on IMAGE, it should have a drop down box giving options, left click on "RESIZE" There will be a box that appears that shows the size of your image. On the right side it will show UNITS.....on the drop down box you can choose inches or pixels, choose pixels. On this site, when you choose "GO ADVANCED", that is where you can add the image and to do so, the image cannot be larger than 750 pixels. On mine, whatever is largest, height or width, I change it to 400 and the smaller measure changes automatically. As long as the largest dimension, whether height or width is not over 750 pixels, the image should upload nicely. Your choice of size up to 750.
Once you have done this, PLEASE got to File and choose "SAVE AS"...you can name that image the same as original but add the word at the end as resized. That way you retain the larger image but also have one you can post. If you want the image to be fairly large, you can go with the 750 pixels, I have used 600 but generally choose 450. That is just personal preference.
Hope this helps!
When you begin your new post on the thread, choose "Go Advanced", scroll down, you will see "Additional Options" and below "Manage Attachments", click on that and a box called "Browse" will come up, click on it, find your photo you have saved, choose it and click on "Upload. As soon as the box is clear, click out and go back to your post and you can post information about the image, then hit send.

THIS is to leovale and everyone else that has been fllowing this thread, it is from FLYING BLUE EAGLE. Today I finally got to ralk to the next person in line that will be getting me the answer to our big myserty about the signature of ANDERSON ON SEVERAL DIFFERENT DENOMANATIONS OF PAPER CURRENCY IN THE YEAR (1953) THAT WAS (SIGNED BY HIM AND HE DID ) NOT become SECRETARY Until ( 1957) . This is the answers that I got so far:: ( QUOTE- The TREASURY probley had a stack of currency that had no signatures on them yet ,and was dated (1953A) and was needing to be put into circulation, so they were signed at that time (1957) BUT - he said that the head man was going to write out answer to me on just what where and how it camre about, He also said that the treasury thought NO ONE would ever catch it , HA HA WE FOOLED;;; (THEM. SOP NOW part of the mystery is solved) I will keep fllowing up on this matter, and let everyone know what I find out ,as soon as I have it . I think I could have spoken to presdient BUSH easier. FBE, The answer seems rather strange. The signatures on currency don't get on the bills the same way sports stars sign memorabilia at a show. That is, the Sec of Treas isn't sitting in his office with a crate full of unsigned $5 bills signing each one until his hand cramps. The sigs are put on at the same time as the Federal Reserve District seal and its corresponding number during the first overprinting in black ink and before the overprinting of the Treasury seal and serial number in green ink. Isn't this correct?
BTB, if the sheets were left in their 32-subject sheets for four years before being cut and overprinted with a later Secretary, would this make such a bill more valuable or is this a common occurrence?

I would like to note that angelo244b has apparently attempted three times to post the image of his bill, apparently unsuccessfully. These attempts are something that most others can't see.
angelo244b, if your would post the legitimate link to the image of your bill, then I would be glad to post an image of it.
A good part of what this site is about is teamwork! :)
Thanks!
If I can help by being more clear in directions, let me know. I will be happy to do so my messenger if angelo is on messenger!

Angelo, since you are having problems with seeing my address, just go to Private Message and send me a new note with your home e-mail address typed in. We can go from there. That way, when I send a note, you can reply and attach image. K??
I wonder if there is a block on your computer not to accept e-mail addresses within the body of an e-mail. I have never heard of that but I am not real computer savvy on those types of things. I think though, since I received your note a bit ago, you can just e-mail your personal e-mail address to me in PM and I should receive it since I have been able to view others who send me theirs.

Hi there! Yes I have replied several times and just answered the last note you sent. I don't understand why we are having difficulty in connecting by mail. Let me try one more thing. Don't give up on me. :)
I tired sending (NOT PRIVATE MESSAGE) but e-mail message bit it said you had not designated one.
Are you not receiving any mail I send to you?

Just had one more thought. Left click on my name jrebel7 on the left side of this page and see options to Private Message or E-mail. If you choose E-mail, it will not show my address but will allow you to e-mail me and I will receive it. In the body of the message, type your personal e-mail address to me that you use and I will reply with more instructions. Let's try that.

Jrebel7 Thanks for your work I really appreciate it. That is a scan I sent you. I hope the others get a look at it, FBE / LEO I am interested in finding out about the signature, it would seem that if the name was on there 3 years BEFORE he became secretary then we might have something here. Looks like LEO got the links to back that up right?

Hey there! It was my pleasure to help you get this posted. I am in the process of posting another image, same bill but did an adjustment on the image to hopefully make it more clear from the image you sent me today. I will post it. If it is better, we can keep that one on the thread.

Image provided by angelo244b - 1953 5 Dollar Note
Trying again to post a more clear image of angelo's 5 dollar note. Hope this make it more clear to view. :)
:::EDIT::: Just for clarification, I had posted this bill previously but the image was not clear. I have reposted but it is now out of normal sequence with the posts above. I apologize for any confusion this might have caused. I believe originally it was post #45 in between F.B.E.'s two posts and just prior to Clough's.

Wow, this really isn't making sense, unless the Moneyfactory.com got it wrong. Here's what I found on the Treasury's Burau of Engraving and Printing web site about currency series.
Series Year and Federal Reserve Bank Indicators
A new series will result from a change in the Secretary of the Treasury, the Treasurer of the United States, and/or a change to the note's appearance such as a new currency design. After the Secretary of the Treasury changes, a new series year is adopted (e.g. 1999). When the Treasurer of the United States changes, a suffix letter is added to the current series year (e.g. 1999A). Additional changes of the Treasurer, whereby the Secretary of the Treasury remains the same results in subsequent letter changes to the current series year (e.g. 1999B, 1999C, etc.).
source: Bureau of Engraving and Printing (http://www.moneyfactory.gov/document.cfm/18/119)
OK, here's what we know
1. Humphrey was the Sec of Treasury from Jan 20, 1953 - July 29, 1957
Therefore, currency printed during his tenure should bear the series year 1953.
2. Priest was Treasurer of U.S. from Jan 28, 1953 - Jan 20, 1961
Priest's term began 8 days AFTER Humphrey's tenure as SecTreas. If any bills were printed in the 8 days between when Humphrey started and Priest arrived, they should bear the series 1953 and have Clark (Priest's predecessor) and Humphrey's signature. I have posted an image on page 3 showing my bill is a 1953, yet the signators are Priest/Humphrey.
Once Priest began serving as TreasUS under Humphrey, new printed paper currency should have been designated as the 1953-A series and the signators should have been Priest/Humphrey. Again, my $5 bill is a 1953, but the signators should suggest it is a 1953-A.
3. Anderson became Sec of Treasury July 29, 1957
Since the SecTreas changed, a new series year should be adopted when Anderson arrived and they should bear the series year 1957. Since Priest was still TreasUS and he and Anderson resigned Jan 20, 1961 currency with their signatures should be 1957 series (no letter suffix).
As an aside (for those who haven't seen a pattern), entrance and resignation dates for new officials at this level (not surprisingly) coincide with, or are very close to, the inauguration day of a new President.
So if the BEP web site is accurate, why is my bill a 1953 series and not a 1953-A, and why is Angelo's bill a 1953-A and not a 1957?
My guess is that either I misinterpreted the explanation of how series years/letters are assigned or it's inaccurate (perhaps by ommission).

OK guys! I have done some searching too, if we all see that Robert B Anderson wasn't Sec of the Treasury UNTIL July 29th 1957 WHY is his signature on the bill I have? Error note? Is there a simple explanation? Which is it?

Ok I have read most of the posts on this thread. I do not understand the signatures and dates. I am not a collector but came across a red five dollar bill.
1953B series, c54430413A serial #, Elizabeth Rudel Smith Treasurer(61-Apr.62) and C. Douglas Dillon Sec. Treas.(61-65). How can they print in later years. I find the bills are more interesting as conversation pieces than the face value.

Hi, F.B.E. I'd like to help here, but it's hard to move anything around to a referred page here, unless I have a definite link. Posting, "( bdigger- post # 5 , on page one ( 1 )" doesn't really tell me anything and I would have to search really hard for the thread and post. Providing the link to the particular thread would be the best thing to do.
Thanks!

Thanks

Hi All, I stumbled on this thread while researching questions for another site where I supervise the Coins and Paper Money category.
To clear up a lot of confusion, there is neither error nor clairvoyance involved in the signatures and dates shown on the bills. The conditions that the BEP uses to trigger a date or series letter change are not the same now as they were 50 years ago. At that time a new date was used only when there was a design change. The series letter changed when either a new Secretary of the Treasury or U.S. Treasurer took office. That's why, for example, the 1935 series of $1 silver certificates was actually printed well into the Johnson administration, with letters going up to H.
In addition the plates were not necessarily changed the instant a new official took office. Those (in)famous Barr notes were issued for a considerable portion of 1968 even though Mr. Barr served only for about a month. Almost half a BILLION notes with his signature were printed and, urban legends to the contrary, they're not very valuable.
The policy today is to change the series year when a new Secretary takes office, and change the letter when a new Treasurer is appointed. I haven't seen anything to confirm this but it seems that a design change is no longer a criterion, which is why we have 2004-A $10 bills but no 2004's, and two different $5 designs under the 2006 series.

Dear MR flying Blue Eagle
Thank you for your letter of OCTOber 31,2008. YOU appear of the opinion that these particular note series were or issued before the start of ANDERSON'S term of office.
CONTRARY TO YOUR OPINION the records show that each series was delivered or issued at least a month after ANDERSON BECAME SECRETARY OF THE TREASURY. THE beginning delivery dates for these series are provided below:

You've probably figured it out long ago, but US bills of certain series are printed for the following several years. To demonstrate the following, the 1953C weren't printed until around February 1963. I found a great website with the serial numbers broken down according to series. The top right even shows who signed on the bills.
