How can I get to the stem out to replace the washer?

I believe stanadyne is a MOEN valve.

If this is a single handle tub/shower valve..or just a shower valve.

Shut water off
Remove handle and face plate
Remove the chrome sleeve
Remove the copper cartridge clip
Give good PULL on stem or reattach handle and then give good pull to remove cartridge.
Then, pulse water on/off to clear valve of any sediment
Then replace with a new cartridge.
Replace clip
Replace sleeve
Replace knob
Turn water back on.
TEST

The hot and cold is reversible on the MOEN valves, the notch should be on the top of the stem.

Here is a pic. That may help as well... (click on attachment moenparts2.pdf)

If this is a three handle valve, then shut water, and remove handle and then look at the picture in attachment (moenthreehandleshowervalve.pdf) to remove the stem/cartridge. Basically, remove handle, remove escutcheon, remove cartridge nut and handle adapter, then remove cartridge (remember to pulse water real quick to clear faucet of sediment). Then reverse process to put back together.

Also note that moen guarantees parts for lifetime... call 1800BUYMOEN if can wait for replacement cartridge (they will ship in 10business days or less including shipping for no cost to you... there is a $12.00 charge if you want part in 2 days). Otherwise, most home supply stores have replacement cartridges.

Good luck... let us know how it works out... Mark

Mark gave you a great answer complete with images. I'm going to assume that you have a one handled valve and take you to a linl where you will receive instructions on how to change out a cartridge. Click on; Installation Help / Animated Tutorial - Installing the Moen 1225 / 1200 Cartridge (http://www.moen.com/consumersupport/installation/moen0133/moen0133.cfm) and don't forget to turn the water back on when you have the valve open to flush out the supplies and valve body. Good luck. Tom
