My 7 yr old white boxer has had a lot of kidney problems over the past couple of months. She was passing a huge amount of blood through her urine and was admitted for a week at the animal hospital. It looks like she might lose one of her kidneys if the other one can cope (we are waiting on test results from the specialist). She is a lot better now but she has over a stone in weight. She went from being 29kg to 21kg. Her ribs and hips are sticking out, she looks awful. She isn't a greedy dog and won't eat over 2 tins a day. She will only eat one brand of dog food and doesn't like dry biscuits although she will eat bakers meaty soft ones but only a few a day.

The vet has said to give her time, but its been 3 weeks and she is still getting thinner. I have been to 2 vets because the first one said that she just had an infection when it was looking like renal failure. I can't afford any more vets fees, overall its cost £2300, the insurance will only pay me back £1000. Is there any diet I can put her on to make her gain weight? I feel alone on this and my vet doesn't seem to care. I physically can't get anymore money to take her anywhere else and I'm at my wits end.

Edit - she has been wormed and the vet checked her over for that.

The diagnoses has to be correct, does he really actually think its renal failure, which is entirely non reversible and no amount of food will do any good to put on weight. Can you afford a second opinion ?

Hello
First of all, I'm so sorry :(
Second, I think that maybe if you mix food (the one your dog love and the other is just to get weight), plus if you can set together and eat, maybe your dog will see you eating then do the same.. also (I do this for my cat), why don't you feed your dog by your hand for a while.. you know dogs love it.
I hope I helped you somehow.. :)
Good luck sweetie
