Can someone clarify the meaning of "Lessor" when it comes to a Lease to Purchase Agreement?

Can "Lessor" be a subleaser?

My husband and I entered into a lease/purchase agreement with someone who proclaimed himself to be the owner of the property. After investigation it has came about that he is NOT the owner but he is the subleaser of the property. He (subleaser) has a lease/purchase agreement with the owner. Then he turned around and entered into a lease/purchase agreement with me and my husband.
Is this legal especially since me and my husband were lead to believe that he was the Owner?

Now he is running away with out $10,000 downpayment.

PLEASE HELP

This is complicated. He is the lessee/buyer in his agreement. If his agreement allows it, he can sell his interest by creating a contract where he becomes the lessor/seller. However, he can't complete his contract with you until he has completed his contract with his lessor/seller. As long as his agreement allows him to do this then it is legal.

I strongly recommend that you get yourself an attorney immediately.
