You need to call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040.

IRS takes 8 to 12 weeks to amend you tax return. Only after 8 weeks you can call and find out the status of refund. The info is not available online for amended returns.

I sent my amended tax return via certified and w/return receipt card. Its been 10 days. Is this normal for a return receipt to be sent by the IRS? Or should I cantact the post office?

Yes, that kind of time delay is very normal. Mailed that is Certified Mail Return receipt requires special handling, which takes time.

As an FYI, the IRS now quotes a processing time of 12-16 weeks for a 1040X. I found this out from speaking to the IRS recently. Which was changed even though their documents say 8-12 weeks. And many IRS representatives won't research it for you when you call unless 12-16 weeks have elapsed.

The representative also told me their experiencing a lot of back log, and many of the F1040X, that claim the first time home buyers credit are being reviewed by their exam dept. due to fraud.

I sent the 1040x form in along with a copy of my w-2 form. When I called to check the status of my return after 7 weeks they stated something was missing. When I asked what was missing they couldn't tell me. So my question is what do you think was missing?

To answer your question, I would have to see the Form 1040X that you submitted.

Most likely, a support form (Schedule A, Schedule D, whatever) was not attached to the Form 1040X.

My understanding of their processing your return, you're getting the horse before the cart. You're trying to find out what's wrong, before the 12-16 weeks has elapsed. Within that timeframe the IRS is suppose to send you a letter stating what's wrong with your return or missing. I'd wait for the letter.

We could guess what's missing from what you requested on the return, but we'd be guessing.

The website is probably WRONG.

Unless you DID submit an amended return.

You can not file an amendment online. It must be mailed.

Two months after mailing the amendment, you can call 1-800-829-1040.

Calling any earlier is a waste of time.

If your correction was sent to a specific person in the IRS, then two weeks should be all you need to wait.
