I recently (45 days ago) had my driveway paved. Now there is a lot of grass growing up in the driveway, not along the edges but up in the middle of the driveway. How can I kill it. I have tried roundup and it makes the asphalt slimy but does not kill the grass. My $16000 driveway is starting to look worse that it did before paving. The contractor said he salted the area to keep the grass from growing, now he says there is nothing he can/will do. Any help is greatly appreciated. Homer

If you have a contract/warrantee/guarantee look at it and see if there is anything in it that says anything or not that covers it.
Also you could use asphalt sealer there and see if that helps any.

There is a contract for paving, a certain number of sq feet a thickness of 2 inches and prep of land. However the contractor said he wont/cant do anything about grass so for me to sue him if I want to. What a putz. I'm just trying to stop the area from getting any worse. But I do have a sign in the yard telling everyone who did the great job on my pavement.

I would say if you have grass growing in the middle of your driveway after only 45 days... the asphalt is more than likely NOT 2 inches thick. I would call another contractor... have him cut a section out... if it is not 2 inches thick... the original contractor is screwed... call a lawyer!!

Can you measure the asphalt yourself... like on the outer edge?
Is it in the contract that you have to keep the sign in the yard?
Maybe put another sign next to the grass with an arrow saying great job aye!

Did you watch to see how this shyster prepared your drive before laying the asphalt? There should have been an evcavation of the top soil followed with 4" minimum of gravel and then the 2" minimum of black top. Grass will not grow through 6" of this stuff in 45 years let alone 45 days. I have never in my life heard of someone salting an area before asphalting, you dig it out not just kill the grass.

ballengerb1 is 110% correct. You always clear all the sod away first. Over time it will disappear and can leave voids under your slab. And also I would cut a piece out where the grass is growing because if the ground was not properly graded before the asphalt was installed you could have some areas 3" and some areas 1/2". It has been done by some less caring contractors... charge you for more than they give (thickness)... it boosts the proffits you see.It would not help to measure the edges because there is no grass growing there.

I have made an appt with another contractor who is going to cut out a piece of it for me. I also have an appt with my lawyer. Don't know where it will go from here but thanks for your comments. I have had several people call me about my sign... I can promise that he will lose more money in the coming months than fixing my job would have cost.

Three days later after they put down the asphalt grass was growing. The damm contractor would not even return my phone calls. When I call the operator the only thing she did got my name and number. The second phone call she hang up and told me that she got my number that it and hang up. I got another contrator and his word was that the first contractor one place down 1' half inch of asphalt. What to do. Sue?
