While I don't think it is harmful to your unborn child, you must remember that your hormones are different while you're pregnant. So be very careful to keep your skin well moisturized. This will also lessen your chances of getting stretch marks, even if your not in the sun. Always remember to protect your face and body with sunscreen. Be careful the sun seems to bring out what is called the pregnancy mask which is dark spots on your face. I'm not sure if sunscreen helps with this. I am a mother of 3.

I would like to add another concern to this... I am going to the spain in May and will be 5 months pregnant by then. I am concerned about the baby over heating... is this possible? I am from Ireland so I have quite fair skin... will it be risky?

There are many importnant concenrs to keep in mind when being out in the sun. Being in the sun does increase chances of " pregnancy mask" (dark splotches on your skin, particularly across your nose and cheeks) showing up. It does fade away after pregnancy, but its not attractive while it's there. Another is that it is so easy to become dehydrated, even when you aren't in the sun. When you go out in the sun, its easy to become over heated, and dehydrated. Its wise to drink twice the usual amount of water, if you plan on being outside for an extended period, and taking often shade breaks. Its something that you definitely want to talk to your doctor about. They may say it is fine as long as those precautions are observed, or they might say absolutely not. No way to know until you ask.
