I would like to tear up half my driveway by hand ;which type of tools do you recommend? Also, can I have stamped concrete over asphalt or do they stamp asphalt as well?

Electric pavement or asphalt breaker, shovel, wheel barrow. If you really want hand tools substitute pick for breaker.

After you get the asphalt up there will be a significant layer of gravel under the drive. Make that a big wheel barrow.

Not a good idea to put concrete over asphalt and I have not heard of stamped asphalt.

You might be able to reuse the gravel under the asphalt but it will need to be leveled. The concrete stamping can also be stained nut generally doubles your cost compared to plain poured concrete.

Older Blacktop is usually 2 inches unless there is another coat there.. But With a Pick or Grub.. Start at the Side by Grass or Edge, and Lift a little to See If It moves.. Blacktop should GIVE more than Concrete which is HARDER.

Once You Get a few chunks out, You can Use a couple strong Shovels, and Lift and It should Break, Often I would put a brick or Board under a piece of it, and Jump on the Edge and It Would Break off.

As for STAMPING Blacktop This Company has Contractor members nationwide. It Looks Great when done right. (Not for the Novice) Decorative Asphalt Solutions by Integrated Paving Concepts Inc. | The makers of StreetPrint, DuraTherm, LogoTherm, Ride-A-Way (http://www.integratedpaving.com/)

If your in an area that gets Frost, another BLACKTOP Driveway would be Great. But Make Sure They "GRADE AND ROLL" The Sub-base and Save Room For Maybe Some Good Item 4 Stone. And about 2.5 Inches (Before Compaction with 1 to 2 ton Roller) of State-Approved TOP or Driveway Mix Material. (type 6 NY)

If You Join Old Blacktop To NEW... It's a Good Idea to "HEAT With A Special Torch) The Edge Of The OLD Blacktop (or They can Put A few Piles On IT... and Let The HOT Blacktop Heat IT UP, So There Will Be NO Seam.

But If It Were ME...I Would Do The Above BUT Add About One INCH OVER The Old Driveway, To Make it ALL Look "Brand New". 2.5 over the Compacted STONE/Dirt, and 1" Over The Old Part.. Uniformly...

"Put 2 Inches Of Hot Blacktop Over The Stone"... which should MEET the Old Blacktop- "WHEN ROLLED) THEN... Cap The Whole Thing, With One Inch, after the Old is Cleaned off, and a Few Shovel fulls spread THIN over the OLD, Will HELP BIND The OLD To The NEW... A good Blacktop person should KNOW This and always Ask them to show you a few Jobs nearby.. I figure between .90 to a dollar for the CAP, and $1.50 Per Sq. Ft. for The Grading plus adding the Item 4 (Cut Stone and dirt- 1/2 inch-to 3/4 size Stone) And Rolling Everything Before the Final One inch CAP. Email if you have questions or post here.. Hope this helps..

Remember Getting RID of OLD Blacktop Is Not Easy. Some THINK it is Hazardous Waste.. But Other Places will Take It As FILL. Or Fill Holes on your Property If Needed.

Last QUESTION: Do You Really NEED To Dig OUT Half? Or Some By The DOOR To Make ROOM For The Water Pitch? (Drainage Flow?)
