Hello,

In 2006, I was on OPT and working full-time for the entire year and filed 1040NR-EZ. The same year I also brought a car and paid over $1300 for sales tax. I need help to find out how I can amend 2006 returns to claim the Sales tax deductions. Should I have used "Other Miscellaneous Deductions" back then. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

If you filed 1040-EZ, then you could not claim any deductions, as this form is for filers who take the standard deduction only. If you want to reconsider, then you would file an amended 1040X for 2006, this time using itemized deductions. Unless you have other deductions to take (property tax, mortgage interest, charitable contributions) it is unlikely that itemizing rather than taking the standard deduction would help you.
