I am wanting to get custody of my younger sister who is 17. I am living in CA and she is still living in Alabama where we were both born and raised. She is living with her adopted father and he told her, he doesn't want her anymore and is saying he is going to send her to a home. She is on probation for not going to school, and the court has told her she can not live with her biological mother. Now am I going to have to find a family lawyer in Alabama or can I find one here in California?

I would start with one in CA and applyfor guardianship.

Really what we need to know is a little more about your situation. Do you have a steady job and a means to support both of you? Is she going to be willing to do the things she needs to do when she gets there ? ( going to school, staying away from drugs, not running afoul with the law ). Its going to be a commitment from both of you to make things happen or not. How much longer till she is 18 ? Is she currently working if she isn't going to school ? If she is working and she can make it on her own then she might be able to file for emancipation. I know sometimes when asking a question it sounds simple but sometimes things can get complicated so it helps to explain a little. Hope things work out for all parties.

You'd have to do it in Alabama.
