I own a 30 year old home that has a basement with a sump pit, our washer dumps into this pit, because that is how the previous owner did it, not knowing that it should not have been that way. A few months after we moved in we started getting horrible sewage odors that would come and go with no rhyme or reason. We have had many plumbers and recently had the sump pit covered, and piping run to vent our washer (pea trap) to eliminate this smell. However, it has not went away completely. We were told that we should get a lift pump because our washer sets in the basement which is at least 5 feet below the septic tank, for the washer to drain into the septic. Is this legal, and will it fix our problem? Tired of living in a sewer.
