I adopted a cat about 5 weeks ago from a shelter. Soon after having the 5 month old tabby home she started coughing, almost like "hair balls." Having another cat in the home I took her to the vet. The vet said it was common for "pound" cats to have Feline Upper Respiratory Infections. M.J. "the new cat" that had no other symptoms should recover on her own, the incubation period of 2 weeks. If other symptoms occurred she needed anitbotics, and I could get them at our local feed bin. It has now been 5 weeks and M.J. is still coughing, and my older cat which is now 7 is coughing. I know I need to start her on anitbotics which one works best?

Please ask your vet about the antibiotic. He will know best for your cats' situation. (Be sure to tell him about your older cat.)

"Works best" is dependent upon the problem, as different issues require different types of antibiotics, but it can also depend on the cat. Some cats react differently to different antibiotics.

The only reason I'm adding to this thread is because cats can also react badly to antibiotics. Usually it's something annoying but not terribly harmful, such as puking or diarrhea. But not only is that uncomfortable for the cat, the reaction can actually be something more serious. Any time your cat is put on an antibiotic (or any pill for that matter), watch out for signs of anything weird like this and inform your vet if anything happens. Most of the time there's another one you can try if the first one gets a reaction.

Just curious. Is that just amoxicillin in a drop form, or does it contain something else?

It's amoxicillin,liquid form to help making dosing a cat or small dog easier.Children are also prescribed this for Strep.There are other antibiotics like Cefadrops,(Keflex),which also come in a liquid.
