Dear Electric Experts,

After reading responses from Rick, ScotGem and especially TKRussell, am not optimistic about alternatives... would like to install a chandelier in pre-WWII bldg... they will not allow digging into the concrete... only 6" between ceiling and floor above...

Am aware of 'pancake' box only 3/4" deep which could be surface mounted and camouflaged with medalion... but how to run electric to it??

Thought I heard of a surface conduit that could be plastered over... but based on all your answers (and you seem to know what's out there) I must be dreaming.

The electric source can be easily tapped to come in through an adjacent wall (plaster) very close to the ceiling but am I relegated to creating fake beams or something to make this look OK?

Also, the fixture I have in mind is about 34 lbs... what do you suggest for solid anchors to support this kind of weight. I have installed window treatments in concrete before (very messy) but no where near this kind on weight... Help!

Madam, are you in NYC?

Dear Stanfortyman... am not in NYC but the bldg. (my son's) is in Washington DC... does it make a difference? Would appreciate any input from you... and even for NYC because. Another daughter is about to buy a small place there! Who knows what obstacles/problems await this armchair designer/decorator/fix it mother?

I don't know about DC, but in NYC you'd better not touch anything electrical without being licensed, insured, and ready to "pay off" whomever it takes to get the job done without any "issues".
