I have removed a corner bathtub, and wish to install a bathtub and separate shower.

It is an existing bathroom that was installed when the house was built.

There is an existing double "p" trap in the drain line where the old tub drained, but I wish to move the shower drain about 2 ft farther away, then the tub drain another 2 ft.

Does both the tub and shower need "P" traps?

Can I install both drains into the same line, they will not be used at the same time?

How do I stop the tub water from coming up into the shower drain, or will the p trap stop that?

I am not clear on the 2 ptraps kirojocoet... but not even sure important here as it sounds like you are ripping that stuff out (let me know.. ok?).

The tub needs an 1.5" trap and a 1.5"vent

The shower needs a 2"trap and a 1.5"vent

You can install them in the same drain line.

The water is stopped from flowing into the tub by virtue of the pitch in the drain pipe and the vent that allows for turbulent flow of water. That does not mean water cannot back up into the shower... just means that the pipe will need to be clogged for it to back up into the shower.

I have provided facts and the codes of plumbing as they relate to what you have told me. I am betting, however, that the drain to the old tub is only 1.5inches and now you are wondering how to go about getting 2" over to shower (the drain pipe should be 2" to shower and tub for new installation).
