I am having a problem with my computer. When I try to play certain games my monitor goes blank when I open them. Most games will work but a few that I really want to play, I download them and install them and when I open them my monitor "loses its signal". I get a message on my monitor say no signal. I have to shut down the computer to get it back on. I have no idea what the problem is, if anybody has any ideas please let me know. I am using windows 98 and I am not sure what kind of monitor I have. Thanks.

You need to check to make sure that these games minimum specs are enough for your computer to run.
Quite a few newer games need a separate graphics card to run, rather than the onboard, shared memory type.
Sounds to me as this could be your problem. Your graphics just can't handle the game. There's not much you can do about this save upgrading your machine.

Just to cover our bases... You also should verify you have the latest drivers for your hardware, and firmware for your system's BIOS, installed on your computer.

Hi, MrPoker,
I also use Win98SE, with a Creative SoundBlaster LIve card. I do know, as another answer stated, that my computer will not run some of the newer games. Some require a Video card, such as Radeo, or others.
You might check the requirements for the particular game, see if you meet them.
Best of luck.

If the game is ultra-basic window game (e.g. played by flash) then I don't see why it shouldn't work.
If the game is a more complex game (full screen).. it probably uses Microsoft direct x (and by probably, I mean very very very likely). Now, if your graphics card isn't new enough it won't be able to support the new version of direct x (or at least the version required to play that game). To start the game, the minimum required version of direct x must be installed, and since you say that your monitor looses signal it therefore does 'start' the game (if you didn't have the minimum direct x version, it would give a warning and wouldn't attempt to even start the game). But since it looses signal, this then definitely means that graphics card you have doesn't support the required direct x version -thats why the graphics card will just stall since your trying to make it do something it can't support.
Also, a lot of games won't run on computers without windows XP. And I don't think the new version of direct x can even run on non-windows XP computers (so you'll need a OS and Graphics card update).
