Vascular plants are successful because they have a tube system which can move water beneath the ground up to the above-the-ground photosynthetic structures. It can also move fuel down to the buried water-gathering structures. Without this type of vascular system, there are limits on how tall a plant can be. Bryophytes (nonvascular land plants) depend on water from the air or the limited upward movement water can take against gravity by either diffusing through the plants or by adhesion.
