I will try and be as detailed as possible. My computer spontaneously shut off. Almost like a power outage localized to my computer. I have it on a surge protector / battery back-up so I am hoping it didn't damage my computer. After this happened I was unable to connect to the internet.

I scheduled a scan disk, restarted the computer and went to bed. Next morning same problem cannot connect. I have used every debugging tool I have and nothing seems to work. I even went so far as to reset the CMOS, but as you could have expected nothing happened (desperate times). I cannot renew my ip address. Ip config, release renew the whole deal.

I determined my externals are OK, I am able to get a connection on my laptop at the same location.

I inserted a new Ethernet card and am unable to connect using it.

I have no idea what this could be. Please help

Do you have a start-up disk? This would be the disk that you received when you first bought your computer. You may have to reinstall your hardware. Insert it and while it is booting up press F8. Try this. It worked for me. Hope this helps:) :)

These are some things to consider

System Restore Tutorial

http://vlaurie.com/computers2/Articles/system_restore.htm

Repair Installaion
A Repair Install will replace the system files with the files on the XP CD used for the Repair Install. It will leave your applications and settings intact, but Windows updates will need to be reapplied.
A Repair Install will replace files altered by adware and malware, but will not fix an adware, malware problem.
Perform a Repair Installation (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/doug92.mspx)

And there is a possibility your card slot may shorted or damaged

Download Winsock XP Fix (http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html) and run it. That may fix things without you having to do a full repair.

I like Tech Emperor's answer for fixing WinSock XP Fix (http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html)

I want to look at this from a different angle --- power blinks -- off and back on

This kills power to computer -- modem -- router -- Router and modem fire up

At the same time -- but don't see a computer to connect to and don't connect.

Probably should have turned off modem -- router -- computer and brought them

Back up one at a time modem -- wait -- router --wait -- compouter -- surf

The other thing that comes to mind is some programs have feature that is part

Of program -- program runs and shuts computer off -- when task is completed

I have a desktop hooked to a wireless modem that works just fine. I also have a desktop hooked to the wireless modem by netopia adaptor. Have been unable to connect to internet since turning everything off at the power strip for couple of days. Finally got origianl desktop back online but computer using adaptor still will not connect. (adaptor has been replace--is new) Is there a way to download this winsock fix to a disk and run it on the computer that won't connect? I have been on phone with dsl tech support for hours and their final conclusion is " must be something wrong with my computer":( Tried Microsoft support but can only get so far and the file they say to right click on (framedyn.dll) is not on the computer where they say it should be. I am about nuts over this so any help is greatly appreciated!
I have bellsouth dsl, 2wire wireless modem, windows xp and netopia adaptor

You can download it to USB flash drive or burn it to a CD and then run it on the PC.
I keep a flash drive full of tools like that on my keychain all the time.
