What is the actual difference, if any, between a wireless access point and a router?

A router connect to an external LAN and handles the communications between the two. A router also generally has a DHCP server to assign IP addresses. A WAP is designed to connect to a router and only handles the communications between it, the router and the wireless devices. It generally gets IPs from the router.
