Hi,

I had unprotected sex with my boyfriend 16 or 17 days ago, and he ejaculated inside of me. I have been on birth control for the past 3 and a half years, and I admit I am not always very on time with my pills, and 16 days ago I had left my pills at home and probably didn't take my pill for almost 2 days. I didn't think anything of it until a couple days ago. I finish with a pack of pills on a Wednesday, but the actual menstrual bleeding ALWAYS starts at least 3 days later, and I mean no brown dishcarge or anything. I started feeling bloated last week, and was emotional which is normal for me before my period, but on Friday morning I started to see brown discharge which was unusual but again thought maybe my period was just starting early. Now it is Monday night and it is still just brown discharge with slight pink sometimes and sometimes blood. It is not heavy enough to where a tampon or anything. Also, last week one day I came home from school feeling really nausious and tired all the sudden and headache, so I went home and laid down and felt better after a couple ours of a nap. Also, I can usually stay up until midnight and later with no problem, but for the past couple of days, its like all the sudden around like 8 pm it like hits me and I get soooo tired! Its like I couldn't stay awake if I tried, but I also have been sleeping like a rock the past week or so where I usually don't get very good sleeps. I also get headaches quite a bit. So today I did some research and decided to take a pregnancy test. It came out negative... could I still be pregnant, or am I just worrying too much over nothing?

Sounds like you just have breakthrough bleeding because you missed your pills.

Of course you can be pregnant. Even those of us who take/took our pills religiously have gotten pregnant on the pill. I now have two grown sons, they are the reason I knew the pill didn't work for me.

Hun, you took the test too early. You need to wait AT LEAST until you miss your period before taking a test. Even then, you need to use first morning urine for it to be accurate.

So, if this is breakthrough bleeding, will I still have my period this week?

I would go to the doctor for a pregnancy test and to explain what is going on and the rest of your situation. Home pregnancy tests aren't always accurate, especially if you aren't even late yet. With my first child I took a pregnancy two days before my period was due (we were trying very hard for a child and I couldn't wait) that test was negative. I took another test 6 days later and it was positive (my 1st bundle of joy is now 9 years old) so a few days can make a big difference. Good luck. I hope everything turns out the way you want and that you'll be more careful in the future.

Just because you don't miss your period doesn't mean you're not pregnant. You can still in fact get your period if you're pregnant. Breakthrough bleeding is one thing. I'd wait another week or so and take another test and take it first thing in the morning like J-9 said.
