Hello

I am a software consultant working at client location - which is different from my employer's location. Recently I got the tax filing assessment from my agent and found that the refund for 2007 is going to be very less than what I had received for 2006. My agent indicated that I have been staying in the current client location for almost 2 years now and only for the first year, some expenses (transportation, food, rent etc) can be itemized and deducted from the Gross for tax benefit. According to my agent, that is why my return for 2007 is lesser. Is this true? Where can I find more info about this? Thanks.

That is correct.

In fact, you actually should amend the 2006 return and UNCLAIM the itemized deductions claimed earlier because your move STOPPED being a temporary job assignment once you hit one year and one day at that location.

I am trying to figure out what expenses can be itemized in my case. I am staying in a rented apartment and I know that I will be staying here for more than one year. I work in New York city and live in New Jersey. Can my apartment rent, commute to work expenses etc. be itemized? I know someone who has done this, but I just wanted to make sure that this is allowed by IRS.
I will be filing jointly with my spouse and my spouse does not work. As far as I know this does not make a difference, but I am just mentioning it here in case it helps answer this question.

Thanks in advance.
